Hi Karen and Steve
Our daughter is 6yrs old and has AHC and seizures and her speech is
significantly delayed. Addie did have behaviors act up particularly at the end
of her
school year last year and early summer before her summer school started.
Looking back several things standout..
She was much older and smarter than the school spec ed class she was in. Her
teacher for the last 3 yrs started having alot of problems with her
inflexibility. We saw this at home too. Lots more melt downs, fights with
brother.
Thought we were on a really bad track. However, she was in a great summer
class and fall class where more is expected of her and her classmates (8 other
ranging from 6-8yrs, k-3 grade) are a solid peer group for her. Her teacher's
approaches allows her to feel independent while staying with her schedule and
peers. She also had a big jump in her verbal communication. Although she is
still hard to understand her articulation, she went from 2-5 word sentences to
conversation and thoughts and feelings. So i thinkg her new placement and
structure has helped her self esteem as well as provided good services.
Our neuro in Boston had a family and then teacher/therapist, symposium
addressing epilepsy and schooling. One of the points made is that across most
kids
with nuero issues espec. epilespy, inflexibility is a common thread. These
kids can get stuck and have a harder time tiwh lots of things from transitions(
of anykind) to brain processing speed, fatigue etc. But you have to look at
each child individually to see where their strengths and weakness are. Easy to
say but playing to the strengths while getting support/services to address
weaknesses is necessary.
Medications can also cause behavior issues. Is Ashley on meds for seizures
and AHC?
I hope this helps a little.
