Well, folks, after much annoyance on my part, I have succeeded in
redesigning and launching my web site. Please go check it out and let me
know what you think. I'm sure we'll have a few glitches to work out as yet,
but I'll work through them as they're discovered. :)

http://janna.kensai.com

No updates this time around, but I'm hoping to add content over the next
little while. If you have anything you'd like to contribute to various
sections, please let me know about them.

Thanks, all!

Dear Fellow SoundHealers:

What an amazing year it has been since I immersed myself in this
incredible field of healing with sound and music. I am devoting my
full-time to spreading the word, and networking all over the world
with people interested in this powerful work. Our website has been a
huge success, and I continue to add new information every week.

Due to the many requests, I have now formed the Healing Music
Association. The Healing Music Association is an organization of
people who utilize sound and music in the healing arts. The purpose
of this association is to promote education, scientific study, and a
sense of community for people to share their experiences and
knowledge about sound and music in healing.

If you are interested and want to know more about this new
association, please follow this link to our webpage:
www.healingmusic.org/Healing_Music_Assoc..htm

I want to personally thank each and everyone one of you who is
faithfully doing this healing work with yourself, your friends and
loved ones, and throughout the world. I believe that we are
transforming the vibration of our world one tone at a time.

Blessings.
Om la la shanti,
Amrita

Okay, well, I didn't do a LOT of updates this time around, but I did fix a
couple of inaccuracies in data and I added a discussion area (the messages
don't get sent to you, you have to go and read them each day) and a page for
the IBC International (you have to look to find out what it is!). I also
did a couple of other things that I wrote about at the top of the portal
page. So go have a look and let me know what you think - there should be
more updates by the end of the summer; I'd like to have it mostly complete
(will it ever be complete?) by the time I start getting REALLY busy in
September. :)

Remember, the address is http://janna.kensai.com - go look and have fun!

Hi Mareta,

I'm afraid I know very little about undergraduate programs in music
therapy. I graduated from the master's program at NYU. When I did
my
internship, however, I met someone who was studying at Molloy in New
Jersey, and it sounded like they had a good solid program. You may
want to contact the American Music Therapy Association with your
question. If you don't have their contact information I'll be glad
to
give it to you.

I think an undergraduate program can give you good preparation, but
I'd also advise thinking of going for a master's down the road. I
think it will give you a more solid credential.

I don't know if I can help with all of your questions, but please
don't hesitate to ask. Maybe there are others on the list who will
know more about this?

Dear Mareta,
I received my master's degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, which has a great program, but I realize you're looking in a different area. Florida State University (in Talahassee) has a very strong program, as does Michigan State University (in East Lansing). Those, with the addition of KU (in Lawrence, KS) and my alma mater in Colorado, are the schools that I hear the most about as far as research, excellent curriculum, etc. As you said, UGA also has a great program, and so do some schools in Ohio. I think the one I've heard the most about there is Ohio U, in Athens, Ohio... University of Iowa is also right up there, but I know that's a little midwest.

You can check out www.musictherapy.org for more schools and information, if you haven't been there already. Also, I'd recommend reading Intro. to Music Therapy (Thaut, Davis, and Gfeller) and Music as Therapy (Deforia Lane). The first is a textbook but very helpful in giving a broad idea of what music therapy is about, the second is a more personal autobiography of a wonderful music therapist, with very moving and interesting case studies/examples. If you have any other questions I can help with, please feel free to email me directly also at tigger30@....

I am planning on majoring in Music Therapy in college.  However, the junior
college I am attending does not specifically have music therapy, but they do
have music.  I would like to know what colleges have a good music therapy
program in the Eastern part of the United States.  I live in georgia, I know
that UGA has a great program, but I would like to go else where for my
degree.  Can you help me?

Dear Janna,

I was just surfing the web and I came across this group, and I wanted
to respond to your question. I am a Board Certified Music Therapist,
although I do not work with autism (my specialty is hospice). Still,
I have a few suggestions for you.

A couple of good books to read:

J. Alvin and A. Warwick: Music Therapy for the Autistic Child (Oxford
University Press)

Edith Boxill: Music Therapy for the Developmentally Disabled (Pro-Ed,
Austin, TX)

Also, in my view the primary experts on music therapy and autism are
the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy in New York City,
(212)995-5151. I think they could be the best ones to consult with.

I have also published an article entitled "Music Therapy in the
Treatment of Social Isolation in Visually Impaired Children," which
appeared in the journal RE:view for Winter 1998. It mentions some
exercises with music that would be appropriate for autistic children,
and also contains more references you might find helpful.

Please forgive me if the ground I have covered is already familiar to
you. I hope this helps,

Charles Gourgey, Ph.D., MT-BC

Hello, everyone!

I'm about to create the Music Therapy section of my web site, and I would
appreciate your assistance in compiling a list of music therapy links.
Personal web sites would be great, as would reference sites etc. A web
search can only produce so much information; doubtless you all have more
resources! :)

I would also be interested to know what information you think should be
included in this section of my site. Please feel free to email me privately
at karalianne@....

Thank you!

Hi, I'd like to post an invite over to the new music therapy list on
egroups. It's mainly for students, but of course professionals are
welcome
to come and share their experience. So long as everyone keeps in mind
that
the new list is meant to be a forum for the students to ask questions,
send
gripes, and even just skip out on talking about music therapy once in a
while, we'll do fine.

The list name is mtstudents.

See you there!

Hi Janna,
I'm a musician and psychotherapist, so I don't have a music therapy degree.
But I have been working with music therapeutically here in Wisconsin.
I wonder if you know of Raffi, who is Canadian, and sings children's songs.  He's wonderful, and even babies respond to him.  Fun songs, silly songs, great rhythm.
Might give it a try.  Let me know if it's helpful.
Good luck -- Ryan's lucky to have you in his life!

I work as an ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) therapist for a little
boy (almost 4) who has autism.  When I started working with him back in
August, he was effectively nonverbal and uncompliant to the therapy
(there are five of us working with him).  It was natural for me to just
start singing kids' songs to him, and his Mom is convinced that this is
part of why he is now almost functionally verbal (he'll request things
but is mostly echolalic and into verbal stims).  I go into their home
an extra hour each week to do half an hour of one-on-one singing and
music stimulation followed by half an hour of 'Kindermusik' (I'm not
really qualified to teach this, but that's the material I'm using to
guide the time).  The problem is that right before Christmas, Ryan
started to get tired of the one-on-one sessions.  They're on hold now
until I come up with something new and exciting.

Goals include functional speech and socialization (that's why we have
the group time), and possibly even appropriate play with toys.

I'm not a trained music therapist, though I'm going to go back to
school in a few years and get a degree in MT (at Capilano College in
Vancouver, British Columbia or Wilfrid Laurier in Kitchener-Waterloo in
Ontario - I'm Canadian).  My undergrad degree is in music composition.

If anyone out there is a music therapist and has some ideas of
activities and songs I could use with Ryan, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Ryan's Mom isn't all that impressed with the music therapist we saw
here (once; she canceled two appointments at the last minute, which
meant that Ryan's days were all screwed up), so she's not wanting to go
back to her.

I'd also appreciate any thoughts on good books I could read.  I want to
specialize in autistic kids, but anything would be wonderful - I'm a
voracious reader and I know that I'm going to have to adapt everything
I learn at school to work with 'my kids' - the few psych classes I took
in university, the profs didn't know much at all about autism; it's
like autism is maybe a chapter, if not simply a footnote, in most
people's training...

Thanks for any and all help!

Hello,

I recently discovered your site. I find Music Therapy interesting at
that point that I'd like to study it... I live in Belgium, we only
have 1 place were you can study music therapy, but it's very
'classical-minded' and not quiet specific. I wanted to go and study it
at the university of Quebec(Montréal/Canada) but this seems to be very
very expensive. Most of all I'd like to go and study in France, but it
seems that there are no real possibilities there. Would you know where
or how to find more information about this??

I thank you very much for your time,

Hello Alexander,

Difficult question you ask, I've been tryin to find answers to it myself for
some time now :). My name is Gerard, live in Holland, am psychologist and
musician and tryin to find a job in musictherapy-research. My impression is
that there's still a lot of research to be done on this matter, the research
that has been done seems inconclusive to me. Maybe it's because music is
very personal that's it's difficult to find any results in this kind of
research, the same piece of music that makes you relaxed might not relax me
at all...

Here's an adress that might help you, it's the homepage of a dutch woman,
she does research on effects of music on Alzheimerpatients at a university
in Germany, it has some links which might help you and you can download a
paper she wrote on the subject of music and emotions and pinpoints the
problems in this kind of research. She's very busy at the moment but you can
email her, she might have more specific answers to your question.
Let me know what you find out! :)
What exactly is your interest in this subject? are you a therapist?
Where do you live?

Hope to hear from you again,

Gerard Scholtens

Here's the adress, it hs an english version too

Dear Sirs:

Please help me find an answer to the question I have (it is directly
related to Musictherapy but I am new to this field and the question
is very important for me).

The question is:

What exactly should be listened to and in what cases? Which music
pieces are used to alleviate pain for example? Is there a sort of data-
base or something similar to this where one could go and look up which
music piece can cure this or that symptom? Where is the database and
how to access it?

I thank you very much in advance for your help! Any advice is much
appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Sincerely,
Alexander Sharov

I am interested in creating a list for music therapists working in
education settings, either as hired music therapists or hired music
educators with special populations. If you would be interested to join
and you are a music therapist working in a music education setting,
please contact me.
