Difficult question you ask, I've been tryin to find answers to it myself for
some time now :). My name is Gerard, live in Holland, am psychologist and
musician and tryin to find a job in musictherapy-research. My impression is
that there's still a lot of research to be done on this matter, the research
that has been done seems inconclusive to me. Maybe it's because music is
very personal that's it's difficult to find any results in this kind of
research, the same piece of music that makes you relaxed might not relax me
at all...

Here's an adress that might help you, it's the homepage of a dutch woman,
she does research on effects of music on Alzheimerpatients at a university
in Germany, it has some links which might help you and you can download a
paper she wrote on the subject of music and emotions and pinpoints the
problems in this kind of research. She's very busy at the moment but you can
email her, she might have more specific answers to your question.
