Aimee:
I think that the first week-one month is the roughest, but after a while I forgot that I had them.  I saw changes quickly before the second appointment, but everyone's situation is different....Good luck with them...Especially the flossing...That's tough...Best- Steph

So I got them on and he put clear ones on. I don't look that bad but the wiring is poking me. I haven't felt the soreness yet but I know I will. I feel so weird with them, how long will that last? Also how long before I start seeing changes in my teeth?

Hey.  Congrats!  Hehehe.  :-)  With wires poking, wax will become your best friend!  I never had any soreness when I got my braces on.  I didn't start getting soreness until they started putting power chains on me.  I don't remember them feeling weird for more than week.  Then you get use to them.  My biggest thing was I was scared to eat, but don't be, you can eat just fine if you have any worries about that.  I started seeing changes in my teeth very quickly, within a few weeks.

My facial structure changed slightly. The only people who really noticed were
my sister, my mother, and me (after they pointed it out to me). My face was
always very round before braces, but over the course of two years, my jaw
elongated a bit, which made my lips appear fuller (even after the braces were
removed) instead of sunken in.

Oh, and the best part was when I got them off, I had a smile I could be proud
of, instead of snaggletooth overbite.

So you may have minor facial changes, but most likely you will find them to be
an improvement.

I can't imagine that happening. Invisalign are expensive, as are brackets for
traditional braces. Then add in the expense of changing your treatment, and you
have some big bucks. I can only imagine an orthodontist would do this if he
promised that Invisalign would fix the problem, and the problem turned out to be
more complicated than originally planned, or perhaps the teeth were stubborn
about moving.

Regarding your prior question about Invisalign vs. brackets, if you have a bad
bite (malocclusion) such as overbite, overjet, open bite, or cross bite,
Invisalign can't really fix those issues. You'll need the brackets to actually
pull your teeth into the correct position.

While Invisalign may be great for straightening a bit of crowding or
crookedness, it's really not good for fixing larger structural problems.

I've had my braces off for a couple of years, and I was one of the first
patients that my orthodontist actually consented to working with ceramics.

I was 37 and worried about metal, but as it stood, I ended up with metal on the
lowers, and ceramic on the uppers.

As far as the pain factor is concerned, each had their own disadvantages.
Ceramics felt larger and kind of bulky, although they were much smoother against
the insides of my lips. Metal were smaller, but a bit sharper. With metal,
your orthodontist can use more torque when tightening up your arch wire without
fear of breaking a bracket.

With ceramic, there's only so much torque they can use. Ceramic brackets have a
tendency to pop off easier, as well. Overall, ceramic brackets can increase
your time in braces by quite a bit. My orthodontist estimated that my time in
braces went about 4 months longer in ceramic than I would have spent in all
metal.

The cost difference was minimal.

So, it boils down to comfort and aesthetics. What are you willing to put up
with?

Yea, Jennifer sums it up nicely.  I chose the metal because of what I have seen on others...and that they are harder for them to work with, more fragile and treatment takes longer. Good luck with your choice...Steph

My Orthodontist didn't even ask.  I went with what he thought would be best and he put metal braces on me.  Although, I didn't even mention other kinds of braces, like Invisalign cuz I knew that wouldn't fix my teeth how I wanted.  The problem with ceramic braces, since they are such a light color, they can stain really easily and give your teeth a dirty look.  Treatment can also take longer with ceramic.  They are also a little bigger than the metal braces.  My ex's sister has ceramic and I thought they made her teeth look dirty when she'd smile.  I've had metal braces on for 2 years and 1 month as of yesterday.  Metal braces are also stronger than ceramic, so depending on the type of ortho work you need, the ceramic braces may not be strong enough.  Hope this helps.  And good luck with your treatment!  :-)

Does the orthodontist give you an option of getting ceramic or metal
braces. I actually wanted the Invisalign but he told me that they
wouldn't work very well for my teeth and that I would be disappointed
with the outcome. I wanted the Invisalign because no one would be able
to see them. So I was thinking now of getting the ceramic. I have seen
them and they don't look that bad.

Hi Aimee -

The spacers may be a little uncomfortable for a day or two or they may just feel like you have food stuck between your teeth.  Or, you will forget they are there shortly after leaving the ortho.  They will only be put on your back teeth and only near the ones that your ortho intends to band.

The invisalign aligners are only good for only particular types of orthodontic problems.  They weren't offered to me when I was about to get braces.  Even if you did qualify for Invisalign there may have been some places that would need traditional bands or brackets first before the Invisalign aligners can be used.

I was offered upper and lower metal brackets or ceramic brackets on only my upper teeth and metal on the bottom.  The metal and ceramic combination was a lot more money.  You will probably be given similar options.  I had already decided that if I am going to get braces that they are going to look like braces and my smile would be metallic for a few years.

Ceramic brackets may make you feel better about how you look during your orthodontic treatment so if it is important to you to be less conspicuous the extra cost for the ceramic may be the best for you.  Self image is very important.  Personally, I think that metal brackets were the best choice for me but you have to be comfortable about what you see in the mirror.

People that will notice your braces will see them whether they are ceramic or metal.  Some people who may not recognize that you have braces may think your teeth look dirty if you have ceramic.  Metal braces will only make your teeth look dirty if there is food stuck in them.  But, 99.9% of the people out there will not notice your braces at all.

Go with what makes you feel best about getting braces.  Ceramic or metal hardly makes any difference in your treatment or how long you will be in braces.

Best of luck.

Jack

Hey,
I wouldn't worry about it that much, although it will be very painful (just telling the truth!).  The weirdest part is having your lips propped open by the lip stretcher thing while they put the braces on. It seemed like an hour of that.  The next weird part is trying to eat or drink and then you have to face all of your friends and family and hear "Oh, I didn't know that you were getting braces ... how cute!"  At least you get lots of attention when trying to do anything that requires and id (drinking!)

YOu will be fine !  Keep in touch and post some pictures!

Hi Aimee:
Well, I think that we feel that it changes our appearance more than it does at first. After a while, I would forget and others would notice. You will be so glad that you have gotten the process started.  It will be somewhat painful at first, but you will be used to it very quickly.  Hang in there, knowing that who cares how you look in braces, but how you'll look when you are done....
Take care- Steph

I thought my braces would blind everyone, but I've discovered that
people don't notice until I point then out. I was talking to one guy
about my age (we'll say 45+) and noted that he had them, so I asked
about them and pointed mine out and he did a double-take.

It is not unusual at all to see people in their 30, 40 and 50's with
braces any more.

just want to introduce myself. My name is lisa and im 32 yrs old.I have decided to get my teeth straightened. my top teeth are perfect.my bottom teeth are really crooked.im very happy with the top and iim not letting the orthodonist touch the top at all.. i have my consultation on sept 30th...i know this sounds like an odd question but is it cheaper to just have  braces on one set of teeth?  i see no point of having them on the straight ones

thanks

My guess is that he/she will need the top ones to use to move the bottom ones with rubber bands and such. Plus, once the bottoms are where they need to be the top may not be quite what you hoped.  Good luck with it!

Hi all!

I'm 27 and just got braces for the first time. It's all metal and the
plastic bits are the same metal color. I'm finally beginning to eat
solid foods again. :D Although sometimes one or two of my teeth feel
like they are very loose, and are painful.

I get to have these in for two years. Then one tooth in the upper
back will have to be removed (the one under it is already gone) when
the braces are out.

I'm eager to finally have straight teeth! :)

Kat

About 4 years ago, I was told retainers at the dental school (in the US) where I had my braces done were $200 per arch to replace. And that was for Essix or Hawley. But I think that $200 fee included a few followup visits.

Thanks for your message. It should be Hawley retainers. I would also
appreciate your reply to get a rough idea of what the costs could be
like. Best Regards Thomas

I'm from the US so I can't help you there, but you didn't specify
whether you want Hawley or Essix retainers (or maybe changing to fixed
retainers)....

Hi everybody!

Lately, I've lost my retainers (Hawley) when moving places. Before
arranging an orthodontist appointment, I would like to get an idea of
the costs for both, upper and lower teeth.
As I live in Germany I would appreciate answers from people of this or
neighbouring countries, - I know that prices can be lower in the US.

Many thanks in advance and all the best for the New Year,

Thomas

Hi guys.
question....Tuesday I went to get new power chains. Evidently, my
teeth aren't closing fast enough, so they doubled the power chains on
the bottom...OUCH! Anyway, I can see a difference now, but my problem
is now....I'm having some gum swelling. Like when you have something
stuck in teeth, and the gum swells. Is this normal you think w/the
teeth movement?
Thanks!
