Hi Sylvia,
I am 2 1/2 years into my treatment but it sounds like you are going to be going through almost exactly what I did. Although I did not have a bite splint, I did have SARPE surgery and an expander when I started my orthodontic treatment. The surgery itself was not bad, it sounds a lot worse than it is. The only trouble I had was with the anesthesia they gave me and another med. I had after (but I am really sensitive to all drugs). Your face will be pretty swollen for a couple of weeks. I also had bruising too. A couple of days after my surgery I had 2 black eyes! Those went away pretty quick but I had a pretty stubborn bruise on my jaw that stayed for a few weeks. I also have had 3 teeth on top pulled (2 after my expander came off and 1 just recently) and 2 on the bottom pullled (the same time as the surgery). The turning of the expander wasn't a big deal, it wasn't
painful for me, I just felt some pressure for few seconds and then it felt fine. My ortho is trying to talk me into having more surgery (to pull my upper jaw up and my lower jaw forward) but I have opted not to do that. Good luck to you!
Tiana

Iam 38 years old and this will be my first time with braces. I have
been diagnosed with TMJ. I have been wearing a bite splint for 10
months now. I had skin graphing done 3 weeks ago. (did not like that)
In 3 days I get my spacers. One week later I will be getting my
brackets on the lower teeth. I will need 2 teeth pulled on the bottom
and 2 on the top. In a few weeks I will be getting a palatal expander
put in and shortly after that I will have the palatal widening
surgery. Then 8 months later another palate widening surgery plus jaw
surgery to correct my alignment. Does anyone know about the palate
widening surgery and what I should expect?
