I got my upper retainer today. It's a Hawley and it's neon pink. LOL! They asked me what color I wanted two weeks ago and I must have given them a "huh?" look. She suggested pink and I thought it was going to more natural gum colored. Oh well... it doesn't show.
It's weird when you first get it. Once again I couldn't talk. But as the day's gone by, my speech has become clearer. Certain sounds are hard because of tongue placement against the roof of the mouth, but that will clear up with time I'm sure.
I have to wear it 24/7 for 6 weeks, then 14 hours a day for 3 months, then nights only for another 15 months and then alternating nights after that or whatever the orthodontist recommends. I'm beginning to think I'll have this retainer when I'm 89 and in the nursing home.
I didn't expect it to make my teeth sore, but it has. When I removed it for supper, the teeth were a little tender. That too shall pass. But Lordy how I love being able to floss with ease (except the bottom where the bonded retainer is) but I'm using something new on those (and other spots too). They're Gum Soft-Picks and I found them at Walmart. I was using them just to help get out food lodged in the braces in the back. Then my orthodontist said someone had brought some to him to check out and he said they're almost as good as flossing. They're easy to carry in your pocket or purse and can help get out stuck food easily. Here's a link to show you what they are.
Anyway, now I have something else to get used to and right now I must have a spot of exposed root or something cause I have this pain every now and then. Just started today so it must be related to the retainer.
Hope y'all are having great progress and that soon you too will be in retention.
