I received this update from American Humane.
The NC Senate has passed a bill that will include pets in domestic
violence protective orders so that abusers cannot get to their families
through their pets. So now pets are protected from spouse and child
abusers as well.
Just thought you might find this of interest!

> We are thrilled to announce that Senate Bill 1062, an initiative
sponsored by Sen. Julia Boseman and spearheaded by the North Carolina
Coalition Against Domestic Violence, passed the House floor late on July
27. SB 1062 will encourage judges to include pets in domestic violence
protective orders. Since the bill passed the Senate several weeks ago,
it is now on its way to Gov. Perdue's desk for signature. This is a
historic day for survivors of domestic violence throughout North Carolina!
