Here's the thing: Girls living in poverty are uniquely capable of creating a
better future. But when a girl reaches adolescence, she comes to a crossroads.
Things can go one of two ways for her-and for everyone around her.
One: She gets a chance, gets educated, stays healthy and HIV-negative, marries
when she chooses, raises a healthy family, and has the opportunity to raise the
standard of living for herself, her brothers, her family, her community, and her
country.
Two: None of these things happen. She is illiterate, married off, isolated,
pregnant, and vulnerable to HIV. She and her family are stuck in a cycle of
poverty.

The Girl Effect, n.
The powerful social and economic change brought about when girls have the
opportunity to participate in their society.

FACTS
For every development dollar spent, girls receive only one half of one cent.
A woman or girl will reinvest 90% of her income into her family. A man will
reinvest 30-40%.
When girls have received seven or more years of education, they marry four years
later and have 2.2 fewer children.
An extra year of primary school raises a girl's lifetime wages by 10-20%. An
extra year of secondary school raises her lifetime wages by 15-25%.
Research in developing countries has shown that the children of educated women
are healthier and more likely to be in school themselves.
