Dear Anna:
Glad to hear you made it through his first fever. After a few times, you
will become a pro. Angela had lots of ear infections with mild fevers, and
at times, it was not even necessary to increase her cortef as she was active
and responsive. Just remember, as long as your boy is active and is dealing
with his fever and is the Tylenol is reducing it, at times, increasing
cortef is not always necessary. However, you have to be the judge because
you know your child better than even your pediatrician.
I sympathize with your upcoming surgery. I didn't think boys had a problem
with their genital area, as testorone was being overproduced when I was
pregnant. Angela had her 1st surgery at 3 mos. to remove the excess skin
she had that made her look boy-like. At 15 mos. she had her second surgery
to make her vaginal opening larger. It was very successful and she looks
just like any other girl, except for some minor scarring. She does not even
remember the surgeries and we have not had that talk yet. At 6, its still a
little hard for them to understand, however, she knows all about why she
takes her meds. I highly recommend getting the surgery done at their
youngest age, as it is less stressful for them, however, not matter what
age, it is very stressful as parents. I thank god we have great doctors
here in Pittsburgh, PA and her urologist was a miracle worker.
She had her last check up with the endrocrologiest in early June. Happily
all is well, growing right on target!! The key, be timely with your meds
and don't forget to every give them to him. Otherwise, your child should
grow up just as normally as any other child we/of CAH. Angela is happy and
healthy. She is now on tablets, which she doesn't care for, but we put
them in a piece of banana and she just eats them up. She a great child and
has never, ever given me any problems with taking her meds.
Today is a big day for me. As for the first time ever, I have left her in
the care of another person (other than friends and family). She is in
Brownies and is at a 3 day, day camp, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The nurse assured me
she would receive her meds as scheduled. I hope she is having a wonderful
time.
Take care and god bless you and your family.
Debbie
