Hi Trish,
Interesting connection. We should set up one of those polls!

I was told that the chicken pox virus can do damage to nerves such as the damage seen in the Adies eye. So it is possible that it is connected to your daughter's shingles.I would have had to wait 6- 8 months to see the consultant for a diagnosis and ended up paying to see someone sooner. The test that he did to diagnose Adies and rule out anything else was to put a drop of 0.5% strength pilocarpine into the eye and if the pupil contracts then it is diagnosed.I don't think you can get pilocarpine without a prescription ...or if a GP can prescribe this without you having to wait to see the specialist. Maybe worth a try though?Good Luck.Rachel----- Original Message -----From: helene042004Sent: Monday, November 15, 2004 2:48 AMSubject: [adie_syndrome] New Eye Problem
My 12 year old daughter has suffered 2 bouts of shingles around her
waist over the last couple of months. These have responded well to
acyclovir.
This week she started complaining about eye strain and I made an
appointment at the opticians. The optician asked us whether anyone
had ever commented that she had one pupil much bigger than the other.
He then alarmed us by giving us a referral letter for my doctor to
send to the Royal Free Hospital in London.
After much hunting on the web, I discovered your support group.
There seems to be a connection with the shingles and the eyes. Can
anyone advise me about what sort of questions I should ask. The
National Health Service will be slow about providing an appointment.
How urgent is it that she is seen immediately?
We are very worried about this. Any helpful advice would be
welcomed.
