My name is Nikki and I am new to the group. I have 2 children that have
been DX w/ ADHD and 1 w/ ADHD, ODD and anxiety disorder. The question
that I have is: Is it a normal thing for them all to be so little. It
seems as though the meds they are on stunts their growth. They were all
DX at 4 yrs of age. I am a little concerned about their weights and
height. Is it just me?

Yes drugs used to treat ADHD can affect appetite and growth. Is your Dr.
tracking their growth and weight on each visit? This is something you may want
to discuss with the Dr.

Yes, the Dr. tracks the weight and growth every 3 months. She says they
are putting on weight, that children should be putting on about 2lbs a
yr. Thanks for replying.

Our daughter (now 11) is smaller as well. Our dr. does not seem too concerned
as long as she is following along the growth curve for her. At this point for
us, the meds help her disposition more than worrying about her height.

It can affect their growth in that their appetites are supressed. William
(8) was in the 90-95th percentile for most of his life. Now he's in the 50th
The doctor charts his growth at every visit to make sure he's not losing
more ground. He's never LOST weight but as he grows taller (I think he just
did again because his pants are shorter and looser around his waist :P) he's
not gaining weight proportionately. To encourage him to eat I pointed out
that his sister (3 years younger) is now a size 6/6x while he's still a 7/8.
lol He suddenly had an urge to eat! rofl It's a real balancing act to allow
them to eat whenever they want so they get the nutrition they need and still
teach them healthy eating habits. The day will come when we won't want them

1. Major attitudes.
2. Boys -- can inhale the contents of one regular sized refrigerator in a
nanosecond! Then when THAT'S consumed, they ask, "What's to eat???"
3. You're used to buying milk on a weekly basis? Forget about it! You're
lucky to keep up DAILY. The only solution I've come up with is getting our own
cow! But the neighbors wouldn't appreciate that I don't think! LOL
Growth. . .
"Mom, those (fill in the blank) you bought me yesterday are too small!" SIGH .
. . you learn it just is not a battle you're going to win. Just leave the check
book @ the (clothing, grocery, shoe) store (take your choice!)
So, as long as they're gaining and growing and the Dr. says no problems, hang in
there!

Then try not to worry too much. I know for my DS (he's 16) the most important
meals of the day for him are breakfast and supper. He eats a HUGE breakfast
that is a balance of proteins and carbohydrates. And he eats his breakfast
BEFORE taking his Focalin XR. He does also supplement with Carnation Instant
Breakfast (chocolate). It all helps!
He does eat SOMETHING for lunch (packs a sammy, fruit and cheese stick) --
sometimes all of it, sometimes just the sammy . . . whatever. The main point
is he brings home what he doesn't eat!
He is average height (5 ft. 3 in -- so taller than I am!) and he is thin, but I
believe he comes by that biologically.
Take care,
Barb

Welcome Nikki- I'm Nikki too. My son is almost 8 and i am starting to wonder
about the meds affecting his heighth. He is one of the smallest kids in his
class/grade. Are you short or tall? I am only 5ft tall . I don't know which is
affecting his height. Let me know if you find any good info on this subject.

Well, I am only 5 ' 1, so I'll pick short :). My DD and DS's are all
short, and they are all on meds. Let's put it this way. My DD is in the
6th grade and she always gets confused for a 3rd grader. She hates it,
and says kids pick on her and some say how cute she is. The Dr. just
told me that she'll put on some height and they put my DS's on meds to
make them hungry. Which does seem to work. If I find anything out more,
I'll fill you in. Nice meeting you! Keep in touch, sounds like we have
some things in common! :)

When my son was younger the Dr was concerned about his height & weight, in fact
when he was bout 10 you could see his ribs & his legs looked like sticks. He
was not losing weight & was slowly growing, just not like she (Dr) thought he
should, but we decided to give it time. Well, he's now 16 & 5'7" & 130 lbs. He
sprouted between Middle school & High school at about 14 y/o. I'm short, 5'1",
& his dad is 5'10", all the males in the family are fairly thin till they hit
about 19 so no one is concerned now. He's been on meds since age 6.
Sometimes I think we get worried over normal things just because they "might" be
a side effect of the meds.

Thank you. My oldest son sounds just like yours did. This puts me at

people can grow weirdly. My oldest stopped growing for awhile but the doc
was not concerned. This is because my dad's side of the family has pretty
well documented cases of transient growing. For example, my dad entered
high school at 4 foot 11 inches. He graduated at 5 foot 2 inches. Was 5
foot 4 inches when he got married 2 years later. He today stands at 5 foot
8 inches (so he grew over 4 inches in his 20's).
My oldest, after growing 1/2 inch the last 4 years (only 18 months on
medication.. so hadn't grown for almost 18 months before medication) grew
almost 6 inches last year and probably gained another 2-3 inches since
August.
[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I'm 5'3, DH is 5'6. DD is not on meds (yet?) and is shorter than many
of the
3rd and 4th graders even though she's in 5th grade. I even know one 7 y/o
who is taller than she is. We also know a set of twins where the one
who eats
better is several inches taller than her counterpart. Its really hard
to tell what
is from meds and what is genetic.
