ADHD can be readily recognized sometimes and tests are quite expensive. Some
Drs will refuse to prescribe without the tests while others feel confident in
what they see. The use of meds on a child without ADHD will probably show an
incorrect diagnosis quickly without harm done.

My daughter was diagnosed 4 years ago in much the same way Debra's son was so
many years ago. Her testing was done by a neurologist that specialized in ADHD,
and we were given a 10 page report when she was done with all the testing. It
was also done over several days.

DEBBIE>Wow the testing sure has changed! My son is 18 now, but he was tested
when he was in the 2nd grade. Let's just say we waited in the waiting room for
quite a while and when I read the very detailed report, he was given various
test, asked to play different games, etc. It seemed that his attention to
matters and how long he was able to attend to something was looked at more than
his memory to stuff. How interesting!

When my son's kindergarten teacher suspected he had ADHD, we went to
our pediatrician first. Just by talking to me, and hearing
the "symptoms", he made a preliminary diagnosis, and then referred
us to a child psychologist. The psychologist did several tests with
my son. They mostly focused on memory - remembering a series of
pictures, for instance, and then several where he had to complete a
puzzle. These tests took about 45 minutes. I think they use a
standard for what a child without the disorder would be able to
complete. From those results, he was able to tell me that my son
had ADHD. I suppose all doctors are different, so it's hard to tell
how they will make their diagnosis.
I hope this was helpful.
