Hi All,
Well, as most of you probably know, I've been battling with the NHS for
years to try and get them to put right what they did wrong in ruining my
health...remove the amalgam fillings from my mouth which are making me ill and
replace them with safe white composite fillings. It's been a long hard battle
which
is now over. I didn't lose exactly, but I didn't win either...I guess it was
a draw but I am no nearly to getting rid of this toxic material from my
mouth than I was 9 years ago when I first got so terribly ill.
After 2 years of trying to get a test done on the NHS, which the BDA would
recognise, in January 2000 I got a metal patch test done at the Royal London
Dental Institute in Whitechapel, London. The result was positive and I was
told that the NHS would pay for the removal and replacement of the fillings. I
was also tested at the same time for composite materials to see if I had a
reaction of those, and thankfully, I didn’t. Next was the problem of trying
to
find out where and when the work would be done and by whom. I spent 3 years
being tossed from dentist to doctor, doctor to dentist, like a tennis ball.
I'd been told I'd definitely have my fillings removed but who would arrange it,
and when, where etc? My dentist said that as the fillings were making me
ill it was a medical issue and my GP had to find someone to remove the
fillings. My GP said that as the fillings were in my teeth it was a dental
issue.
Back and forth, back and forth and meanwhile I was in the middle of my GP and
dentist, suffering.
Last year was a very traumatic year for me as I lost someone very dear to me
and my life was turned upside down and my fillings had to be 'put on the
back burner' so to speak, until I felt emotionally well enough to carry on the
fight. During last summer my GP referred me back to the Royal London Dental
Institute. After some months I was seen by a Consultant Dentist/Immunologist.
She asked why, after 5 years, I was being referred back to the Institute. When
I said that it was to get these toxic fillings removed she was astounded
that I still had the fillings. When she had read my 2nd referral letter she
thought I must have had them removed 5 years ago directly after my positive
test.
She then told me that they should have been taken out and replaced years ago
and that she would arrange for it to be done.

I then had to go across to the main hospital and have a lot of blood taken
as she wanted to check my whole body and immune system to find out what, if
any, damage had been done to my system due to the mercury. It sounded too good
to be true but I really did think that maybe, I was at last, getting
somewhere. I then had to make an appointment for six weeks later to get the
results
and sort out details of the dental work to be done. The Consultant told me
that the work WAS going to be done, it didn't rely on the tests she was doing
now as I'd had the positive mercury test result 5 years ago.
Last week I went back to the Institute. What a let down! I've been so
depressed since I came home and dread to think what my life is going to be like
from now on. I was told that a letter would be sent to my NON mercury-free
dentist telling him that he was to remove my fillings and replace them with
composites under the NHS. When I said that my dentist wasn't able to do the
work as
he didn't have the instruments or knowledge to do it, I was told that he
did. I was told that all dentists had rubber dams and that was all that was
needed. The Consultant began to tell me what a rubber dam was and how it would
protect me. I spoke up and said that I knew what a rubber dam was and I knew
that I needed more than that and proceeded to tell about the correct way of
taking amalgams out without any more risk to my health. As you probably guess,
I
was looked upon as if I was from another planet and thought to be over
cautious and taking notice of dentists who (in the Consultant's words) "are
only
in it for the money and charge extortionate prices for 'so called' safe
removal". I was seething by that time. I argued and argued that there was a
right
and a wrong way of taking the fillings out and that it MUST be done the right
way, which is the way mercury-free dentists do it and they DO NOT take the
money from patients under false pretenses.
We got into quite a discussion about the whole amalgam issue and, although
it was agreed that amalgam is treated as toxic waste and can be harmful to our
immune systems and those who are ill from it MUST have the fillings removed,
this was as far as it went. I had to leave before I lost my cool completely.
So, the NHS do tests and they WILL remove the fillings from a patient if the
test is positive but NOT safely! I now wonder just how many patients have
taken notice of this rubbish and allowed the fillings to be removed thinking
that they were safe, and just what kind of state their health is in now. I
won by having them admit to me, after all these years of denying it, that
amalgam mercury fillings are dangerous to our health and I actually got as far
as
them saying they WILL remove the fillings, but I still have them and it looks
as if I always will, and therefore will always be ill as I cannot afford to
have them removed. I've not been able to work because of what my fillings
have done to my health and my husband cannot help me as he is registered
disabled due to his own health issues.
The future looks very bleak now as fighting the NHS kept me going but now I
feel there's nothing left. We are just entering winter now and it's a time of
year I dread as a lot of my symptoms appear only in wintertime and the
symptoms I have all year round tend to get worse. The pain and burning in my
hands
and feet is always bad in winter. I was hoping that this would be my first
winter in 9 years without this pain. But it seems I'm destined to live each
winter the same from now on and to struggle through the rest of the year as I
have been. I don't think I can. I fought to find a light at the end of the
tunnel and saw a glimmer of it recently, but the light has gone out.
As for the test results on my whole system it was found that my Amylase and
Creatinine levels were much higher than normal. There seems to be a page of
blood test results missing from what I was given for both myself and my doctor
and I wonder if this was done on purpose. Are they trying to hide something?
On the lists I have next to the result of my test is the range of what the
results would normally be to be well, all except next to the urine mercury
test. This is the only test result which does not give the safe limits!!!
Hmmm!!! I really don't trust these results and wonder whether any, especially
the
mercury one, is the real result. I had a blood mercury test but the result of
that is missing, it would seem that this is on the page which is missing!
The urine mercury test was printed as this:

Urine Mercury/Creatinine ratio 3.4
(Urine Creatinine) 2.9
Does anyone know why there are 3 figures for the test? Also, is this a low
result?
I can't understand, if nearly all the results on the papers I have are
within the normal range, why I am so ill. I would have thought the results
would
have been higher or lower in many tests depending on what they should be.
Sorry for going on and on and for sounding so depressed. I fought to get
well and that fight kept me going...it's now over and there's nothing left any
more to keep me going. I had a glimmer of light showing me the way for a long
time but now that's been blown out.
