Cortef - too much - too little?   Message List

Hi All,

Wishing everyone well and energetic. First of all are you
aware of the Pituitary Forum on MSN:
http://groups.msn.com/PituitaryTumor/messageboard.msnw

The group is concerning pituitary disorders which I believe
Addison's is. The people on the board are very
knowledgable.

OK - that said here is my question.

Are there many out there with adrenal insufficiency who are
taking cortef (hydrocortisone ) and are adjusting the
amount they take?

I started on Prednisone but it did nothing for me so my
endo prescribed Cortef and I felt much better. The common
dose is 30mg, (10mg 3 times a day.) After about six months
my hair started to fall out again, I gained 20 pounds and
got that tell tale chipmunk face, Buddha belly and now
cataracts.

My endo said I could reduce the amount of Cortef by 1/2 a
tab every three weeks and see how I did. Now I am taking 5,
5, and 10mg. I thought I was doing ok, much less energy but
the hair stopped falling out, and I am losing weight slowly
(YEAH!). But lately I?m getting super fatigued again and
this morning found myself nodding off sitting up on the
couch.

I?m not in any particular stressed state which would call
for an increased dose of Cortef.

Anybody have any ideas? The Cortef is really doing a job on
my body. However I do not want to get back to that state of
being so exhausted I lay in bed and do not even think, just
exist.

Thanks in Advance,

Beverly
