Shang Han Lun Seminar - San Francisco Area, CA. Sept 27-28, 2008



There is a great seminar coming up on the Shang Han Lun. It is an
advanced training program, starting from the beginning. The teacher
is Dr. Arnaud Versluys , who has received his full training in
China...from the beginning and all the way to a PHD in shang han lun.
In addition, he has studied with several Shang Han Lun masters, and
also reads and speaks chinese.

This is very rare, esp. for western students who do not speak chinese.
It is a series of classes, the first parts are in Sept. And the next

Weekend One Fall 2008 - 19 lines of the Neijing

In his preface, Zhang Zhong Jing states that before
writing his work, he studied the Nei Jing Su Wen and the Yin Yang Da
Lun (Great Treatise on Yin and Yang). Many scholars believe that the
Yin Yang Da Lun refers to Chapters 66 through 74 of the Su Wen. These
chapters comprise nearly one-third of the entire Su Wen and cover the
doctrine of Wu yun liu qi (5 periods and 6 qi). Wu yun liu qi explains
what ancient Masters knew about the relationship between climate and
other occurrences, and particularly health and illness. The first 3
chapters explain basic concepts and the later chapters clarify the
application of these concepts.
Chapter 74 lays out the effects of climate changes on human health and
how to diagnose and treat these illnesses based on the flavor and
temperature of herbs. It is also in this chapter that the famous "19
lines" are provided. The first weekend of the program will lay the
foundation for studying the Shang Han Lun by illuminating the concepts
of Wu yun liu qi (5 periods and 6 qi) and liu jing (6 Channels or
Conformations: tai yang, shao yang etc.); broadening our understanding
of Biao & Ben ~ Manifestation and Root (sometimes called root and
branch); clarifying the effects of climate change on health and
disease; illustrating the clinical usefulness of the "19 lines"; and
setting the stage for understanding formulas based on flavor and qi
(temperature).
