You should expect a very comfortable and relaxing experience. We have
found the following to be powerful to help smokers stop.
1) Do not smoke any cigarettes for 24 hours before your treatment.
It's not a law, but it is amazing to experience the way acupuncture
takes away the urge to smoke. It gives you a bodily-felt awareness of
the fact that something besides cigarettes can calm the tension.
2) Ask for ear magnets. These provide a wonderful way to handle
sudden urges. Instead of reaching for a pack, you reach up and gently
squeeze some ear points. This reactivates the treatment to alleviate
the urge somewhat, right when you need it. Leave the magnets in until
your next treatment. If you don't get magnets, carry some sugarless
gum around, and pop one into your mouth when you get the urge. I also
learned of a technique where whole cloves are used. Whenever you get
the urge, pop a clove in your mouth. It has a natural anesthetic that
will help alleviate the urge.
3) Remember that the acupuncture is only an assistant to your own
desire to quit. It is your will that must be kept strong. If you
start up again, just forgive yourself and stop again. Don't let
yourself go to frustration. You only fail when you give up, not when
you backslide.
4) Bring along a pair of shorts and a tank top. It is impossible to
guess where needles will be needed, and these are much better than
the paper gowns that we have to use otherwise.
5) Enjoy the process and learn about yourself. You are about to find
out things you never knew about your body. Have fun with it and it
will be much more powerful.
Good luck,
Jim
