SINGAPORE: Ang Mo Kio Hospital is to offer "tuina", a traditional
Chinese massage, to patients from July, the first public hospital in
Singapore to do so.
It was also the first public hospital to offer acupuncture as a form
of treatment 10 years ago.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Committee had recommended the
use of acupuncture as an accepted form of treatment.
It's now looking at other forms of therapy, in particular "tuina".
Acting Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said: "I did call up Dr Chong
Weng Chiew because he's running Ang Mo Kio Community Hospital, and
he was very enthusiastic. He said he'll go around to look for a good
tuina physician."
Dr Chong said the hospital is looking for a suitable candidate from
China.
He estimates this will be finalised within three months.
"In Traditional Chinese Medicine, tuina is used for quite a large
variety of indications. But for purposes of use in our hospitals, I
think we will begin with a more restrictive list," said Professor
Hong Hai, a member of the TCM Committee.
And if the wide acceptance of acupuncture is anything to go
by, "tuina" may soon be embraced by all. - CNA
