Insomnia is a symptom of disturbed Shen (spirit), the jingshen of the
Heart. The acupuncturist has to find why the Heart is disturbed. Very
commonly, there is not enough Kidney yin and so not enough Heart yin;
there is a disequilibrium between fire and water, and the yang
becomes excessive relative to the deficient yin. The Shen cannot
retire at night.
Afflux, or the damming and backing-up of the energy into the distinct
channels affects the Heart because all the distinct channels pass
through the Heart.
There could be too much heat in the Upper Jiao. Or maybe the Yin Qiao
Mai is bringing too much fire to the eyes, or the Yang Qiao Mai is
not bringing enough water to the eyes, or fire and water come to the
eyes at the wrong times. Or excessive Liver fire can disturb the
Heart.
The Shen can be disturbed because the other jingshen mentational
aspects, Hun or Po, Yi or Zhi, are disturbed.
Any of these conditions are remediable with correct acupuncture
treatment. Correct treatment depends on knowing what is going on with
that particular individual; there is no "formula" that will work for
everyone. A skilled practitioner will be able to help dramatically.
