Hi Micheala,
Congratulations! I have a 3 1/2 year old son with achondroplasia as
well. We fell into an atypical situation, one that you probably won't
have to go through. Eli was born early, and had a few problems due to
that. He was a bit more delayed on some milestones, I think because
he worked so hard to play catch-up.
He also had a severe problem with obstructive sleep apnea and has
needed a trach the last two years. Most kids with achondroplasia have
some type of obstructive sleep apnea, only 10% need surgery and only
2% of those need a trach.
He has badly bowed legs and will need surgery to correct them.
Who are your doctors and do you have "Health Supervision for Children
with Achondroplasia" ?
At 3 1/2, Eli is doing great. He obviously has a number of medical
complications, and most kids don't necessarily have a bunch of
problems. I read an email from a mom of a 2yo who is going to
convention. She said they'd had no real problems and were just going
to socialize.
It's a wonderful, difficult road....your life will have brighter
colors, sweeter moments, deeper downs, more acute appreciation....I
wouldn't trade him in for that average sized kid I expected;-)
