Hello everyone. I'm posting today with the hopes of getting
some information and guidance.
I'm writing a novel (a series of fantasy novels, to be
specific), and one of my most important characters is an
achondroplastic dwarf. During the editing of the first novel, he has
become the story's focal character, so I really want to make sure
that I get my facts straight.
I've visited lpaonline.org, and am looking for more information
about the daily lives and challenges faced by little people. I'm not
trying to harp on issues or make spectacles of anyone; I just want
to make absolute sure that I get all of my facts straight and write
in a sensitive, responsible way.
One underlying theme of my series is social conscientiousness,
and I use character species in order to demonstrate this. I tell my
stories with the perspective of an obese, gay man living in Texas. I
know what it's like to be an outcast, a weirdo and a mascot, but my
little character faces challenges that I could not understand.
If I can make just one person second guess their notions of
overweight people, gay people, little people or social minorities,
then I would consider this series to be a screaming success. It'd
also be nice to tell a fun story without offending anyone. :) :) Can
anyone help me?
Sincerely,
Nicholas
