Hyperactive children need extra attention, care and love

Jyotsna Jalali

Chandigarh, May 12: OUT of every 100 adolescents, 20 are hyperactive
in nature, and if their energy is not channelised in the proper
direction, they can turn out to be very aggressive, said Former
Coordinator of the Servant of People Society, Dr Avneesh Jolly. He
was speaking at a seminar to parents at Shivalik Public School,
Sector 41.

Jolly also discussed symptoms which can be seen among hyperactive
children. These included situations when a child is not able to
sleep properly, feels stressed and becomes aggressive quite easily.

To avoid such hypersensitivity, Jolly suggested that adolescents
should not be allowed to have junk food and cold drinks, as they add
to hyperactivity in children. Moreover, being snubbed by teachers
and parents is also harmful as hyperactive students tend to develop
negative feelings is such things happen. Physical punishment can
also go against them, Jolly added.

Also present at the lecture was Dr Renu Gandhi, Senior Lecturer from
Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Punjab
University.

Gandhi suggested that family socialising is a must to avoid such
behavioural problems. Parents should devote time to their children
and try to understand their state of mind.

For regulating the energy of hyperactive children, they can also be
put to household chores, Gandhi suggested. She further
said, "Communication gap is a very important area of concern and
should be worked upon by parents. They should try to talk to their
children and must take their children for counselling sessions."

Things to do
* Such children should never be snubbed and all efforts should be
put in to answer their questions
* Parents should watch TV along with their children and must not
switch channel during any obscene scene
* Parents should try to discuss safe sex with their children
* Hot food should not be made available to such hyperactive children
* Hyperactive children preferably should be given a vegetarian diet
