April Book Review

The People Whisperer by Perry Wood

If you tried to read the Tao of Equus but got bogged down this book is for you. In Perry's engagingly simple prose this horse whisperer tells about how horses are our perfect mirrors.  He shares the story of how you can use his techniques to develop trust, understanding and deeper connections with the people in your life. And, if you are a clicker trainer or a tag teacher you will find that his exercises blend easily with these ideas and create a powerful combination that that has the ability to change your world and those around you for the better.

Positive Intentions: it may be hard to believe sometimes but, from their point of view, everything that anyone says or does is motivated in some way by a positive intention. however misguided their motivation may appear, somewhere deep in the recesses of their brain is a good reason for doing what they are doing or saying. It may not see like a good reason to you at all, but to them it is a beneficial reason to be doing or saying what they are doing or saying.

If you can wear another's shoes and see what their reason or positive intention is for their behavior, you will have taken a huge leap forward for man and mankind. Once you realize what is making someone do what they do, and see that they believe it to be positive in some way, the easier it is to deal with the situation.

It is important to realize that people's positive intentions are unconscious most of the time: they are motivated by the intention but aren't necessarily aware of it.

It is possible to stroke or pat a horse with your hand: it is also possible to do it with your heart. It is possible to act like a horse's leader; it is also possible to be a leader. It is possible to appear to be all of those things. The truth is that horses always know the difference between what you appear to be and who you really are

Horses  will mirror the truths about you that you hide even from yourself.

Are You In the Flow? By Stacey Mayo

There is much to be said for being in the flow. This is the place from where dreams happen easily. When you are in the flow, things happen effortlessly, opportunities show up from everywhere and people are helpful and friendly. Here are some examples of some things that could happen when you are in the flow. It is by no means an exhaustive list but rather some I have taken from my own life experience of recent:

You know you are in the flow when:

  • A casher pulls you out of line and brings you to the front of another line
  • All the traffic lights are green
  • People call to offer you discounts on products you want
  • You get through to Delta Frequent Flier on the first try AND get free tickets
  • New clients show up from unexpected places
  • You wake up saying, "I love my life"
  • You go shoe shopping and receive outstanding customer service and find 3 pairs for your "hard to fit" feet within minutes
  • You spontaneously break out in song or dance
  • You find yourself smiling... a lot
  • Articles like this flow out of you with no effort
  • Your big dream feels doable
  • Opportunities abound
  • When little mishaps happen, it doesn't bother you
  • All of these things happen within a couple of days

We all get in the flow sometimes. But what is important to know is this does not have to be an occasional thing. Rather you can create your life to be in the flow more often than it is not.

Notice, I did not say all the time. The reason I do not suggest that you set that goal for yourself is because you are human and you will experience the whole range of emotions in your life's journey, including upset and anger and things will not always go the way you want for them to go. There will always be contrast. But from that place of contrast, we create new desires of what we do want and can get back in the flow again. So a goal I would recommend is to be in the flow the majority of the time or more often than not. Use the times you are not in a good space to propel you forward, to make a decision to get back in the flow. Here are some examples or indicators that could let you know you are not in the flow. (Yes, many of these were taken from my own life as well.)

You know you are NOT in the flow when:

  • You stand in long lines and receive poor service from a grumpy salesperson
  • All the traffic lights on your path are red
  • You spend all day looking for something you desire to purchase and can't seem to find what you want
  • You anger easily
  • You get put on hold forever when calling customer service
  • You dread getting up in the morning
  • Your body feels tight and you feel anxious or fearful
  • You doubt whether your dream will ever happen
  • You can't seem to bring in new clients/business and you want to
  • Trucks pull out in front of you
  • Life seems hard
  • Opportunities seem rare
  • Your dog pees on the carpet and you get so mad you want to ...

So how do you shift to being in the flow more often than not? There are lots of ways. Most of them take practice. All of them take conscious effort. Here are just a few:

  1. Notice when you are not in the flow and make a decision to shift it
  2. Set the intention for how you want something to go, before you engage in it (i.e., intend for a call to go well, to have a task go smoothly, to have a conversation that turns out for the best for everyone, etc.)
  3. Visualize it going well in your mind.
  4. Sing and dance to an uplifting song in your PJs and don't worry if you are off key or can't sing (I can't).
  5. Play the "what if up" game. What's this?

  Labor that Works Miracles by Jim Rohn

Two thousand years ago on April 15th one of Jesus' disciples came to him and said it was time to pay taxes (that's how I know it was around April 15th), but they had no money. In response to his disciple's statement Jesus said "no problem". Now why could he say "no problem"? Well, word had it that Jesus was a miracle worker. If you hand a problem to a miracle worker what they are inclined to say is "no problem". You've got to hang out with people like that.

I belong to a small group and we do business around the world. These guys are all miracle workers. What an incredible group. If you hand any of them a problem guess what they say, "no problem". How many books will they read to solve a problem? As many as it takes. If they need to consult - how much consulting will they do? As much as it takes. How early will they get up? As early as it takes. "No problem"... you got to hang out with people like that. You cannot believe the thrill of being associated with miracle workers, people who will do whatever it takes to get the job done and perform miracles.

When asked about paying the taxes Jesus said it was "no problem". In fact, he said it was going to be easy - he told the disciple to just go fishing. Now it couldn't have been any easier than that, especially for this disciple whose name was Peter, because Peter was a fisherman. Now if you can fish and you should fish and you don't fish - then that is why you do not get a miracle. But Jesus told his disciple to go fishing and the first fish that he caught to look in its mouth. Peter, who was used to strange things happening, agreed. Well, the first fish Peter catches, he looks in its mouth and finds coins. Peter then adds up the coins and they are exactly enough to pay his and Jesus' taxes.

"Wow!", you might say, "That is a miracle!" Here is why we call it a miracle - simply because we don't quite understand how it works. That's all. Doesn't mean it doesn't work, it just means we don't quite understand how it works. Which is true of all miracles. In fact, for most of us – our whole life is a miracle.

How about this miracle... God says if you plant the seed I will make the tree. Wow, you can't have a better arrangement than that. First, it gives God the tough end of the deal. What if you had to make a tree? That would keep you up late at night trying to figure out how to make a tree. God says, "No, leave the miracle part to me. I've got the seed, the soil, the sunshine, the rain and the seasons. I'm God and all this miracles stuff is easy for me. I have reserved something very special for you and that is to plant the seed."

I have found in life that if you want a miracle you first need to do whatever it is you can do - if that's to plant, then plant; if it is to read, then read; if it is to change, then change; if it is to study, then study; if it is to work, then work; whatever you have to do. And then you will be well on your way of doing the labor that works miracles.

The Dynamic Laws of Healing was published 40 years ago...and I
am sure that she relied on material that was far older....guess it
can be summed up in the short phrase that Abraham uses over and
over - it's important to feel good :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Dynamic Laws of Healing by Catherine Ponder
"A frustrated woman had become a mental and physical wreck through dwelling upon her problems. As she continually talked about her aches and pains, they multiplied. She had proved that what you give your attention to increases.
The despair of all the doctors who had tried to help her, she finally sought spiritual healing....Finally, [after listening to her woes], the counselor interrupted her: 'Now that you have told me all that is wrong with you, tell me something that is right with you.'
Almost in anger the sick woman declared there was nothing right in her health. The counselor persisted: "There must be. You are able to walk, talk, see, hear, taste, smell. You are not bedridden or helpless. You are enjoying some degree of health or you would not be here."
Reluctantly the woman agreed that there WAS one thing that was right in her health: Her little finger was perfect!
The counselor told this whining woman to go home and for three days to concentrate on the perfection in that little finger; to praise its health, to thank God for its life and wholeness; and to refuse to speak of her ills.
Three days later the woman return. This time she reluctantly agreed that her health was improving. Not only was there nothing wrong with her little finger, but now her whole right hand was well!
Again she was sent home to praise the increased health found there. As the counselor kept working with her, the woman finally agreed that she was completely healed.
When you are tempted to recite your ills, remember this lady. Find something that you can praise. Be thankful for it and your health will improve.
