Hi Maika!  I was raised with the belief from the Bible passage about a wife submitting to her husband, so I thought that I had to submit to any man I was dating.

I dated a level-headed, intelligent man who was very insistant that any woman in his life must submit to him.  I loved him, so I submitted to him.  In a nutshell ... I endured every form of abuse by him.  I am now free from this man and have learned to run the other way when any man tells me that I must submit to him.

Am I saying that the man you are seeing is abusive?  No, I can't say that about anyone I've not met.  I'm just passing on my experience.

NO !  Maybe men have the "need" for women to submit and those who believe this are attempting to manipulate someone TO submit - just another form of power struggle.  Good luck!  kimberly

I'm going to give that first question a shot. As far as I can tell,
one day before my 30th b-day, being authentic simply means that you
live consciously enough be able to discern what really makes you you
versus what habits and quirks you picked up "along the way."

And in my experience, it's really easy to tell the difference: If you
lose a habit, you THINK you can't live without it. If you lose a part
of yourself, you KNOW you can't live without it.

Cheers,

Maika

Being authentic, what does it really mean?

Where it is winning and where it makes a difference?

How does authentic speaking make a difference, in life,
in conflict, in the world?

Update on The Women's Inquiry and related stuff

A new Yahoo group has been created for Single Mother's Raising Sons:

Single Moms Raising Sons http://groups.yahoo.com/group/momsraisingsons/  was created in response to all the Single Mother raising Son's that contacted our web site. I have lead the Men's Inquiry for over 10 years and have gained 100's of calls from Single Mother's looking for support. I see a need for this and created both the blog and this group to do this.
I do this out of my commitment to relationships and society, for when Son's don't get enough support they tend to act 'out' more, not only causing problems in their own lives but society. This is a complement to the blog on the same topic. http://mothersandsons.blogspot.com/

It's goal is providing support for single mothers raising sons and the to support women in writing a book on this topic. My vision is that I will support some (or several) women in writing a book about collecting the wisdom of mothers in addressing this issue.

I am looking for several co-moderators as well. Your help is appreciated!

The question this month is:

How do we compete with each other? How do women compete differently than men with each other? How does that change in relationships, in dating, and even in the area of competing for men’s attention and resources? How can we connect at a more authentic level and keep jealously out of the way? How does this change in social settings, at work, if we have a female boss and if we have a male boss?

Hope all is well, it was an OUTSTANDING meeting and I WILL be learding it for a while. I am so honored to do that!

Great (and Meaningful) Holiday Gift Suggestions

To Benefit the Men’s and Women’s Inquiry & the Triangle Men’s Center

Here are some gift ideas to support the Men’s & Women’s Inquiry as well as The Men’s Center of the Triangle. It costs several hundred dollars a year to maintain the websites, printing and other supplies. I donate 100% of my time.

A copy of the live recording of The Men’s Inquiry on the topic, “What does it mean to be a man of your word?” http://www.toinquire.com/liveinquiry.htm

Any of the “Finding Our Fire” products, such at the “Finding Our Fire” mug.
http://www.cafepress.com/brossman/1175883

A wall calendar with photos I have taken of Coast & Mountains (On special for $13.95):

http://www.cafepress.com/brossman.46439294

A framed picture with my quote about what marriage is:

http://www.cafepress.com/brossman.56107929

A gift certificate from Barbara Carr for an organic spa facial ($60) and she will donate $10 to the Men’s & Women’s Inquiry:

http://www.naturesface.com

If you would like to help the Triangle Men’s Center, you can purchase the book of local men’s poems, “Men of Their Word” ( I am on page 12) at:
http://www.lulu.com/content/266878

About the book “Finding Our Fire”—it has over 400 pages in a word document and the editing is taking far longer than planned. Also my publisher can not assure that he can get me on Amazon so I am changing publishers to a company owned by Amazon that can. This will delay the final book till after Christmas but a pre-release copy will be offered before in 8X10 size allowing for all pages to be included. I will let you know about that soon if it occurs. 5 people are working to help with this project.

http://www.toinquire.com/findingourfire.htm

If anyone else would like to offer some gift idea for which they would donate part of the money if purchased to The Men’s & Women’s Inquiry or The Men’s Center let me know by the end of this week (including the % donated) and I will send one more note out with that referenced.

Martin Brossman will be leading the discussion. We had a very good
facilitators' meeting after the last Inquiry meeting. We re-looked at
the vision and direction of the Women's Inquiry, and have two key
things to announce:

1) Janet Bauer will be joining the team of leaders for the
Women’s Inquiry and will be an advisor for both the Men’s & Women’s
Inquiry, along with Amy Sky & Barbara Carr Brossman.

2) We came up with where we are going with the Inquiry as well
as what the key ground rules are. They will be discussed tomorrow, in
addition to our monthly question.

Come to the meeting tonight night to find out all the details!

The question of the month is:

"Where does personal / business networking work and what does not work
with it?”

See you tonight!

I want to let you know, as this on line discussion group for the women's inquiry, I asked Evelyn to just forward the note for the in-person meeting to this group. Since some of you are out of the area the only think meaningful would be the questions. It will stay this way until we get enough members for someone to work with Evelyn to develop and encourage the discussion of the questions. Thanks Evelyn for posting  this. One more note:

The Men's Inquiry Live recording - Special Edition 2006 is NOW available on CD and download as MP3's that would work on an IPod.

After many hours The Men's Inquiry Live recording - Special Edition 2006 is NOW available! Please check it out! This is a fundraiser with the book to pay for the web sites, photocopies, and phone calls (I will keep donating my time) for the Men's & Women's Inquiry. Thanks for all the support! Now back to working on the men's inquiry book.. :) I realized that this was very important to make the book complete and use my birthday as an excuse to ask 18 men to let me record them who were both courageous and generous! I will be ordering more copies to buy at the next men's inquiry meeting (as agreed men that showed to the recording may have a copy at cost, just let me know if you are one of those men).

Subject The women's Inquiry is Tuesday night April 25 7-9PM with a
specal event! And a request for guest leaders...

Amy, Barbara and I meet about twice a year to look at how the Women's
Inquiry is going, and we love the way it is unfolding. We also have a
commitment to having it evolve based on the needs of the members. One
goal we set for 2006 was to have some guest facilitators lead the
group. The basic idea of an 'inquiry' into a topic will still exist,
it?s just that we have so many gifted and powerful women involved
that we would like to see expressing their gifts through leadership.
Both Amy & Barbara will still be in the meeting to support whoever
leads it. If you are interested in leading one of the groups, let us
know by email, to me directly at martin@... ( I
manage this email list and the database of names).

This meeting will be one of the few where I will be the guest
facilitator. The topic will be "Men, what do we do with them?" A
light hearted but serious inquiry into interacting with men where my
job will be simply facilitating. My intention is that I bring as much
heart to it that Amy & Barbara do, but if I am a few quarts short
they will also be there to support (grin).

I have great respect for this being a 'women's only' meeting and will
only be involved on a very limited basis like this, but ALWAYS in the
background supporting Barbara and Amy.

I hope to see you tomorrow night at 7PM - 9PM . April 25th.

I am also looking for a date for the next joint Men's and Women's
Inquiry and need someone who will find and schedule a no-cost room in
North Raleigh (we filled my house to capacity last time, and expect
an even bigger group this time). If you have interest in it, come to
tomorrow night?s meeting to discuss it.

Three other ideas: The book is still going along strong at
http://www.toinquire.com/findingourfire.htm

I was published in a book of local male poets which is a fund raiser
for the Triangle Men's Center http://www.toinquire.blogspot.com

And I set up a web site to support single women raising sons at:
http://mothersandsons.blogspot.com/

Last, Barbara & I are doing workshop in May 6th ( A Beautiful Future
Starts Today!). To find out more:
http://www.naturesface.com/news.htm . All of the above help pay for
the place we have the meeting (our house) and the web sites for the
Men's & Women's Inquiry.

Look forward to seeing you!

Subject: [Womens-Inquiry] Fiona Francesca Wolfe-Roberts

Dear all,

We are happy to announce the recent arrival of Fiona
Francesca Wolfe-Roberts, born at 12:06 am on Thursday
March 24, weight 7 lbs 2 oz.  [see attached photos]
She is a happy, healthy baby girl with her mother's
long legs and her father's mouth and hair.  She enjoys
nursing, sleeping, gazing at everything, bouncing, and
making monkey noises.  Her current projects include
learning to laugh, entertaining her parents and
filling diapers.

Before Fiona's arrival, Margaret was baking bread,
going to the credit union, making soysage, going to
the grocery store, baking sweet potatoes, making phone
calls, going for a walk and occasionally musing about
when it would start in earnest.  Her water broke at
10, and two hours later we had a baby girl.  Fiona was
breathing and pink even before she had come all the
way out, and was left on the cord for 45 minutes to
allow her get used to the world of air gradually.
Margaret's two sisters and parents came by in short
order, and we celebrated with a birthday party for wee
Fiona into the wee hours.

Though we her parents fretted over little Fiona’s
choice to remain breech, in spite of our many efforts
to turn her, in the end it really was for the best.
Home birth worked well for us as Margaret was able to
labor in familiar surroundings and all were able to
bond with the newborn during the early hours after her
birth.  We feel very fortunate that we were able to
locate a supremely talented and compassionate midwife
who has caught more than 3000 babies during her long
career, including 600 breeches, to attend Fiona’s
birth.  Margaret is glad to have avoided a C-section,
and that she did it all safely and without drugs so
that she could be awake for the first hours with her
daughter.

We've been busy during this first week but Margaret is
recovering quickly, little Fiona is getting milk, and
we are all learning the art of sleeping, eating and
showering when we can.  We hope you can meet her some
time soon.

Thanks for all your well wishes and support!  She’s
beautiful.  --M

Melissa,

I love the idea of a snugglefest! How gratifying!

It must be really hard to be suddenly without so many
of the foods you associate with happy holiday times.
When I have had to make changes in my diet I usually
came up with some affirming and direct verbal
statement to myself about what I am choosing (or not)
and why. And I invoke the statement whenever the
emotional pressure is greatest. You might want to
rehearse it ahead of time so you remember it on the
spot--maybe something like "i am making healthy
choices for myself" or "i am really happy to be in the
company of people who are enjoyign themselves" or even
"oh yuck" if you want to reduce the temptation for
something you can't have (complete with subtle
wrinkling of the nose LOL!). And you can also, on the
spot and under duress (ie the smell is really making
you salivate!) actively recall the itching or whatever
your unpleasant reaction has been to that particular
food. Makes the yearning lessen.

Other traditions...Hm. we really enjoyed carolling
from house to house when I was a kid. Doing something
generous for other folks...a meditation ceremony for
the solstice with fire/drumming or other introspective
activities...focussing on the natural beauty of the
season with a walk in the woods, cutting snowflakes
from tissue paper...some ideas for you

good luck! Margaret

Hi Evelyn!  He loved the training…makes me curious about the Women Within (think that’s what it’s called?!) weekend.  Not the right time for me currently, as I deal with health issues that make travel difficult.  Maybe in the future, though!  Have any of you attended this woman’s weekend?

Since you’ve talked with Martin, you probably know a bit about me!  I own an interior design firm (which I am transitioning out of…am currently training two wonderful young ladies to run the business). I am beginning a masters in holistic nutrition/doctor of naturopathy, and will be working as a part-time clinical assistant in an acupuncture office.

And you?  Are there others in this online group yet?  I’d love to “meet” you!

Margaret, you just popped in!  Your comments highlight my struggle this holiday season.  My illness has caused (what we hope are) temporary food allergies.  A  LOT of them.  My diet is pretty much limited to meat and most veggies.  No grains, sugar/honey/maple, dairy, tomatoes, corn, fruit, etc.  I have probably a good year of this diet before I can reintroduce these foods, and Thanksgiving was my first holiday with these restrictions.  I’m trying to find ways to spend time with friends and loved ones that don’t revolve around meals, as I am very much grieving for the physical, mental, and social comfort that these holiday food traditions provide. (And watching the people around me eat these things, and having to smell them, is excruciatingly difficult and often brings me nearly to tears!)  I’m not having a great deal of success, and would welcome any suggestions!  (Even ideas to start new traditions that revolve around activities other than eating?)

I have found that one thing that helps me when I’m feeling the blues is to climb under my down comforter…the moment I do, my 2 Chihuahuas join me, and we have a snugglefest!  I also find that no matter where I am, simply closing my eyes and breathing deeply and remembering the blessings in my life brings on a real sense of peace.

Warmly,

Hey Melissa,

I'm here--for now! (will travel soon!)

My ideas are--hm....the holidays do tend to be
stressful for me starting with Thanksgiving and my
birthday at the end of November....but Thanksgiving
with my mom/dad/siblings/in-laws went beautifully this
year. Birthday on the other hand was stress-city, for
whatever the reason. What I have learned aobutr
managing the holidays is to go for the yummy healthy
stuff first, hot hearty soup and good homemade bread,
tea and hot chocolate, cheeses, nuts, all kinds of
fruit, muffins, olives--mm somebody please stop me!
and not over-do it on the sugar. Keep my expectations
real about how much and when I try to do. Thoroughly
enjoy the friendships and events that do sustain me.
Get out into the sunlight every day whether for a walk
or just sitty on my front porch a fweminutes. ..that's
about it. Oh, yes, and I sit down and write a list of
accomplishements every week, keeps me in a positive
frame of mind. Stayin gin touch with friends. That's
it!
so, What do you do to stay sane for the holidays?

Margaret

The question of the month is:  What are some ways we can love
ourselves and others during this time of year?  What are some
healthy ideas if we are feeling the blues, alone, or stressed?  What
is one commitment you are keeping this month?

I will be posting these till we get a moderator for this group. Hope
all of you are well!

For the short term I will be posting the questions from the in-
person women's inquiry list in this group. This is the note Barbara
sent out with the questions:

Barbara's note with the questions of november:

Dear Friends,

Following is the Question of the Month....! Meeting Tuesday evening
7:00 PM. (Martin's Home - directions:
http://www.coachinsupport.com/directions )

Hello this is Barbara Carr. Amy asked me to come up with a question
for this month. I thought we would have some fun by taking this
month's men's inquiry question and exploring it also. Martin chose
to do something different by having several questions to be explored
with the men (in-person and on-line). So here are the questions:

What do you think a partner is looking for?
What do you want in a partner?
What do you bring to a committed relationship?
What would make you more attractive for having or maintaining a
great relationship that is also aligned with your own mission and
values?

And to make it more interesting:
Martin offered if you want to get a general idea of the answers men
gave (giving no specifics to protect the men's confidentiality )
than email him with your response directly. He will take your emails
and offer the men a general answer from the collected emails, which
you will also receive. If you are interested email Martin directly
at: Men@...

Have a wonderful time and I will see you all next month.
