I have recently joined as well and thought I'd introduce myself.
My name is Rob Ritchey. I've been in practice for approximately 4
years in General Orthopaedics with an emphasis on hand and joint
replacement surgery. I'm an avid outdoorsman with particular
interest in thru-hiking and backpacking (at least what my schedule
will allow). I also jog, snowboard, ski, mountain bike and have
recently gotten interested in climbing. Within the next year, I
intent to expand my interest into mountaineering.
I've done multi-day overnight hikes in Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon,
Canyonlands, Yellowstone, Glacier, Yosemite, Sequoia, Rocky Mtn, Mt.
Hood, Mt. Ranier and the Olympics. I spend at least a weekend a
month in the Sierra Nevada - both winter and summer. I've thru-hiked
the 165 mile Tahoe Rim Trail and am thru-hiking the 185 mile Tahoe-
Yosemite Trail in 2007. I've climbed Mt. Shasta and Mt. Whitney.
The list is entertaining, but I haven't even scratched the surface of
what some of you may have accomplished.
I'm excited to have found this group and am ecstatic to combine my
passion for medicine and the wilderness.
Looking forward to stimulating conversation....
Rob

Hey there, I'm new to COMPAS and someday will be more involved; tried
to do this database entry but despite being logged in, there still is
no option to "Add" a record or anything. I know nobody has posted on
this in a while so maybe this is old news! Happy Holidays,

I am hoping they will offer credits for
the fellowship for this, but last I talked to Eric Johnson they had not. Steamboat
and Park City (where the WMS conference is in March) are both great places.

I read the Doug Scott "Wilderness Medicine" article in today's AAPA News, and saw yours and Sara Squyre's photos in there too. The article was excellent, and what a great way to get more info out there about COMPAs. Way to go! :)

ps Regarding the potential PA, I know a PA who lives in Tumwater, WA (not too far from Bellingham) and works at UW. I'll give him a call to see if he's interested....

All, I recently received an email from an individual who will be
applying to PA schools soon. I don't know him, but he says he's an

like to meet a PA or two and shadow them and possibly have a letter of
recommendation written. If you live, or know of any PAs in the
Bellingham, Washington area you may contact him. His name is Abram

Here are step-by-step instructions on inserting your info
into the database. The below link may not work because you still need to log
into your Yahoo account to input your own settings.
I get to the data base but then it

Chair, COMPAS
Dear COMPAS members,
Thank you all for coming out to the COMPAS meeting in
San Francisco! For those of you unable to attend,
Fred, Sara and I were pleasantly surprised by the
turnout. Some had heard of COMPAS and the Wilderness
Medical Society (WMS), while others had not. At the
meeting we met some great folks with an abundance of
amazing backcountry experience. For those of you
unfamiliar with me, I have taken over as Chair of
COMPAS with Fred Wu and Sara Squyres staying on as
Co-Chairs and Christy Mayfield staying on as an
Advisor.
One of our first orders of business was to change the
policy of COMPAS so as to not require concomitant
membership in WMS. We at COMPAS highly encourage WMS
membership (http://wms.org/) as they are a great
organization, but will not require members to join
WMS.
COMPAS will continue not to charge a membership fee.
Some future ideas we are discussing are:
1)Creating a logo for our organization and having
t-shirts, hats, etc, avalable for folks to purchase.
2) Getting the word out to PA programs and PA students
regarding wilderness medicine rotations, and
specifically the WMS wilderness medicine rotation in
Tennessee.
3)Attempt to have a PA as part of the teaching staff
at the WMS student rotation in Tennessee.
4)Hold a workshop at AAPA on some technical aspect of
wilderness medicine (e.g., backcountry splinting
skills).
5) Getting the "From the PAs Desk" in "Wilderness Magazine" (a
publication of the Wilderness Medical Society) up and running again.
I think COMPAS can be a great organization, and
with your help we can accomplish many of these goals.
I really want to emphasize that I am looking for your
tips & ideas about the future of your organization.
Please feel free to email me.
Also, I'd like to get some photos of you all in
action. If you have any cool digital photos of you or
your friends in the outdoors, please email them to me
so that we can consider placing them on the website.
Best wishes, Cristopher Benner
BTW--It was great meeting all of you in San Francisco...including
those of you I have talked to on the phone and e-mailed as well as
all of the new people. I am really pumped about our new leadership
in Cris- as he has many great ideas. Fred and I will still be around
and Christy will step into the advisor's role for this year. I
think that everyone with all of this energy can really get things
moving.

In the past WMS wanted scientific articles. You could probably also

They are both already members of SAAAPA. Do I just need to send you their e-mail addresses? BTW, it was very nice meeting all of you. Thank you. Bill Gephart, PA-S, Class of 2006, Stanford.

Dave, really good meeting you as well. Thanks for
volunteering to write a column for the WMS magazine!
Sounds like you've got some great experience you can
share with all of us. Not sure quite how the writing
for the column works, but will keep you up to date.
Regards, Cris

Glad I had a chance to meet you as
well. I would have stayed and talked more but I was in the middle of a
three hour meeting with APPAP that began before the compass meeting and I had a
speaking part after the compass meeting so I was in a hurry since I was sort of
sneaking out. I was only in town for a couple days and did not attend the
conference.
I would be interested in writing for the
WMS journal from the PA’s. If the journal wants scientific articles,
I don’t think I would have the time and availability to write about
specific studies and conduct research. If they want just educational
pieces of wilderness topics not founded in research then I would not mind to write
articles about various topics. I know you guys don’t know me or my
experience well so I will explain a bit of my experience and credentials below
to give you an idea of my past.
I have been a FP PA for 6 years and will
finish an Emergency Medicine fellowship at the end of this month. I have
practiced as a PA in 3 states, not including two different states in PA
school. I am moving to AnchorageAlaska in July to begin work in
the ED. I have deployed to Saudi Arabia
(years ago) and most recently Iraq.
My job in Iraq
was very much a wilderness experience and I was in charge of training Iraqi
medics and providing health care for over 7000 Iraqi soldiers as well as
visiting health care for many villages around the country. I was chosen
as the USAF Outstanding Global Health Person of the Year and a smaller group of
the AF PA of the Year.
Let me know if this is something that we
will be interested in. I would send this just to you instead of the whole
group, but I am not computer savvy enough to know how to do that so I guess
everyone gets to read the correspondence.
