Primal Quest Med Volunteers   Message List

Hello everyone,

The Primal Quest adventure race,
(http://www.ecoprimalquest.com/2006/announce/) formerly known as the
Subaru Primal Quest, recently announced that after a hiatus in 2005,
will be back in full swing in summer 2006. So what, you ask? Well,
AdventureMed, formerly known as MuddyDog
(http://www.adventuremed.com/index.htm) has previously provided medical
support and once again in 2006 will be providing volunteer medical
support to staff the adventure race. I'm not sure if any of you have
volunteered for this before, or know of any one who has, but it sounds
like a great opportunity to do what we love in an environment we love.

If any of you have done this, or know of any one who has, please
contact me, as I'd really like to learn more. I have been emailing Dr.
David Townes, Medical Director for AdventureMed, and Dr. William
Webster, Medical Director for the Primal Quest. They both are very
excited about the race. They have had PAs volunteer before with much
success.

There are some legal issues that may need addressing. Main one is, if
the race is held in say Colordo and a PA doesn't hold a Colorado
license, can he/she volunteer. Would he/she be covered under Good
Samaritan laws as it is on a voluntary basisi? I don't know the answers
to these. I don't think MD supervision will be an issue, as Dr. Webster
is the medical director and could be a PAs supervising doc.

This sounds really exciting and I think a potentially great and fun
opportunity. From what I've heard in the past, AdventureMed prefers
individuals to volunteer for the whole 7-10 days.

Sounds interesting. From a legal aspect I have heard lawyers state that if you are serving as a PA in any capacity even if it is on a volunteer basis, your...

I don't think Good Sam laws would cover you since you would have a duty to act, if you were to volunteer as a provider at these special events. Fred ... ...
