Alcoholics are experts in coming up with sociably acceptable answers for unacceptable behavior.
A fellow needed to spend some time at the local drying-out clinic where this drunk been sent for recuperation again. Upon his return, a friend asked him how it had been there. "Terrible!" was the reply. "For three weeks, I lived on nothing but food."
CHAPTER FIVE
Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, with their own histories of treatment, early found that even drinking alcoholics tended to be fascinated with their sobriety, that an invariable question inevitably came: "How does it work?" Aptly, then, Wilson chose to title the fifth chapter, of the Big Book, the one setting forth the steps of the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, "How It Works." But this chapter, reflecting all that Bill and Dr. Bob had learned, offered not analysis but witness--the witness of their experience. The structure and style of this whole chapter in no way examined origin or causation--of alcoholism or its cure. The simple format was "This is what we did," a sharing of experience, drinking and sober.
