Let's be certain on an important point as it relates to Alcoholics
Anonymous and the multitude of human ills - they have no standing
within AA. We have one common problem, as it says in our preamble -
alcoholism.
A thorough reading of the 12 & 12 on Tradition 3 is quite revealing:
we welcomed the new and strange alcoholic - because he was alcoholic
and only because he was alcoholic. The important point, however, was
that the new and strange alcoholic never mentioned his other
affliction - because it is not the basis of universal identification
which is what binds our fellowship together.
In "Problems Other Than Alcohol" it still counsels us, even after it
was edited in recent years, that we cannot extend membership in AA
to non-alcohlic drug addicts. However, if the drug addict has a bona
fide alcoholic history he is welcome to join us - but to treat his
alcoholism.
AA cannot be all things to all people - we have to stick with
treating alcoholics of any and every stripe. Overeaters belong in
OA, Drug addicts belong in NA, Sex Addicts in SLA...etc.
"Shoemaker stick to thy last".
