Washoe County Search and Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit orginization to assist the Washoe County Sheriff's office in all aspects of Search & Rescue. Washoe County is in the north western corner of Nevada.
We cover an area from Lake Tahoe to the Oregon border and includes the Cities of Reno, Sparks and Incline Village. This area has a wide range of environments, from the shores of Lake Tahoe to the Northern Sierra at approx 9500 ft to high desert areas of the northern half of the county.
Washoe County Search and Rescue, Inc. is a volunteer group of men and women dedicated to saving lives and providing assistance to lost and injured people in Washoe County and adjacent areas. Since 1965, this privately funded non-profit organization participate in as many as 75 search and rescue missions each year, donating over 5000 man hours of public service per year. These missions include everything from missing children to lost hunters; injured skiers to downed aircraft.
Team members search from four wheel drive vehicles, snowcats and on foot. Each member is trained in skills such as avalanche safety, advanced first aid, winter survival, and land navigation, along with professional search and rescue techniques, such as mantracking (perhaps the most useful tool in the wide-area search effort) to ensure a high level of expertise. The team is on call and ready to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
