Nathan is a boy of extremes, I would not describe him as a hyperactive child, he
is calm and more `in himself' very focus when indulging in activities that
interest him.
He has had many obsessive pursuits over the years. As a toddler he excelled in
activities such as jigsaws, shape games, yet was and still delayed in self help
& social skills, ie getting dressed (Nathan cannot still tie his lacers) he
spent hours lining toy food items up rather than paying shop, if we offered him
a till with toy money he would opt to line the money up in a particular way and
if someone disturb the sequence in which he lined the money up, well there would
be screams & tantrums etc and so on!
Nathan was very aggressive when a toddler, however, as he got older and his
language slowly improved his aggression lessened but didn't completely subside.
He was very selective to whom he interacted with and rejected everyone else, he
never like anyone touching him especially his hands and often would just growled
at people if they tried to talk to him!
Nathan was very fearful of many 'normal sounds' such as the Vacuum cleaner, bath
water draining from the bath or various sounds on TV would send into a state of
sheer panic!
By the age of 5 he had made up his own language that he called `Hench' which he
insisted on using, much to our dismay, that continued for approx 6months
He is now 8 years old and still very obsessive in his interests, he is an avid
collector of different things like `yu-gi-oh cards, teddy bears, which he always
want to take to school each day, I battle with him saying no for fear he will be
ridiculed by his peers but this does not seem to worry him, probably because he
has never really made friend with anyone, Nathan has always like routine,
although so do most children, the difference being if his routine is disturb it
unsettles him.
Each day is different with Nathan and is always determined by what mood he wakes
up in! which is set for the day because he lacks the ability to snap himself out
of it, nor can Paul and I though we try and try to no avail.
Ending on a positive note, Nathan has the most wonderful way of seeing the world
and its so refreshing, he can be so funny, without knowing it….when he asked me
one day where he cane from? I told him, `you were in my tummy when you were a
tiny baby`….he replied….Yes mummy because you ate me!
