I love the use of the science speak "A lot of hooey!"
You think a doctor could actually try to back up his position instead of just discounting our interest in protecting our children.

This is pathetic.  So much for vaccine choice and using blood
titer tests to determine the need to vaccinate.

Merck Focusing on Combination Vaccine Manufacturer Stops Sales of Monovalents for Measles, Mumps, Rubella

      By David Mitchell.
http://is.gd/dD9E

Merck & Co. Inc. has stopped production and sales of its monovalent vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella. The manufacturer instead plans to focus on its combination vaccine, MMRII.
Merck spokeswoman Amy Rose said MMRII accounts for 98 percent of the company's volume for measles, mumps and rubella vaccines, compared to just 2 percent from monovalent vaccines Attenuvax (measles), Mumpsvax (mumps) and Meruvax (rubella).
"The combination vaccine is what's recommended, and it's such a significant portion of the orders we see," said Rose. "It's in the best interest of public health to make more of that rather than dedicate manufacturing capacity to monovalents."
Rose said Merck had not decided when, or if, it might make the monovalent vaccines available for sale in the future.
Doug Campos-Outcalt, M.D., M.P.A., who serves as the AAFP's liaison to the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and is a former member of the AAFP Commission on Clinical Policies and Research, said Merck's decision was insignificant in terms of public health. He added, however, that some parents likely will be unhappy.
"The use of the single antigen is pretty limited," he said. "There's no harm if you need one in getting all three. There are some parents out there that want a delayed vaccine schedule. They want the vaccines spread out over a longer period of time and not so many at once. That's a lot of hooey. Alternative schedules have never been proven to be superior."

Below is info for the dentist that I was referring to at the meeting
(Sambataro). I included contact info for Baylin, the dentist Cara
mentioned. I've taken my daughter to Baylin and myself to Sambataro.
  They both are good.

Sambataro is closer to Annapolis, but not taking new children. He is
focused upon root canals (avoidance, extraction), mercury toxicity and
other adult dental health issues.

Baylin's office is in Reisterstown and very busy, so be prepared to
wait in the office quite awhile. They were very accomodating to us
though, knowing that we had come quite a distance. They took care of
all images and molds needed for prescribed work.

This Week, December 2nd,
the Tuesday Night Natural Market will move inside for the winter.

We are very lucky to be able to use the Miko Wheeler wearhouse off of Chinquapin Round Rd.
The address is 1811 McGuckian Street.
The hours will remain 3:30-6:30.

We will continue to have seasonal veggies, grassfed beef, eggs, bread, seafood, and possibly some crafts.

Miko Wheeler will be setting up a showroom full of beautiful eco-options for your home, and there is plenty of space for us.
It has been getting a little chilly in the parking lot!

Also, we will be at the Riva Market until December 20, along with a lot of crafters and venders with holiday greenery.

See you there,

Hi everyone,
I thought I would share what I have been up to.  Feel free to forward on to anyone you know who is struggling with fertility.  The clinic is meant to be a natural alternative to Shady Grove.  A significant amount of the work that I do with fertility is around educating people about WAPF.

Announcing the Grand Opening of Stillwater Fertility Acupuncture Clinic Maryland’s Natural Fertility and Women’s Care Clinic in Severna Park. www.StillwaterFertilityClinic.com

Opening Day is January 16th, 2009.

As many of you know I have an active fertility acupuncture practice in Annapolis Maryland.  Due to the expanding need for a natural approach to fertility, I decided to open a dedicated clinic.  From now until January 15, I am seeing new and returning patients in the Annapolis office.

Offering free in-person fertility consultations for anyone in Maryland.  There is also information on the website on how to enhance fertility naturally that is free to download.  www.StillwaterFertilityClinic.com

Thank you for helping me connect with people that can benefit from a natural approach to restoring fertility.

Hey Natasha,
I don't think you need to heat raw milk when making yogurt.  You can do all the same steps - just use cold milk out of the refrigerator, mix it with a starter (or other yogurt) and then incubate it for 12-24 hours.  Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe just pasteurized milk needs to be heated first.

As we close on our first fall semester we would like to give our
family and friends a holiday treat, but instead of baking we would
like to do what we do best, sing and dance!

Come and enjoy our informal performance at Woods Memorial Presbyterian
Church at 6 pm on December 12th. This year we will follow Clara (from
the Nutcracker) to the Land of the Sweets, where performers from
different countries share Sweet Treats from their native lands. Every
country brings their own unique delicious sampling: from Spanish hot
chocolate, French marzipan, and German pretzels just to name a few.
Enjoy how the world celebrates the Holiday Season, and see what your
little performer has been up to all semester.

Where: Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore/ Annapolis
Blvd. Severna Park, Maryland

When: 6:00pm Sharp on December 12th

***Fellowship Hall doors will not open until 5:45 pm

Please feel free to make a donation at the door as the church is not
requiring us to pay for the use of the space. Help us show our
appreciation!

***Please sign the guest list in the studio or call to reserve a spot
if you are planning to attend the Holiday Show.

Now that I've made homemade yogurt, I want to make kefir too. Has
anyone ever made Kefir from a previou batch of kefir? I was thinking,
I have some from Rainbow Acres, could I make a new batch from that?
Would I have to filter out and wash the kefir grains like Nourishing
Traditions says? Or can you just pour a certain amount of the old
batch into the new batch? Do I need to keep it warm like yogurt? My
house is down to 60-62 at night and colder if you're sitting on the
granite countertop.
Any wisdom would be great!
Thanks,

I just made 2 quarts of yogurt for the first time yesterday and it's
awesome! I saved an article from a recent issue of New Beginnings (La
Leche League) where a mom wrote very detailed instructions on how she
makes yogurt. I read that and the instructions in Nourishing
Traditions. I heated raw milk to 180 degrees using a candy thermometer
and then cooled it to 110 degrees. I mixed a little with about 1/4 cup
of Rainbow Acres yogurt mixed with Fage Greek yogurt (my kids like the
thick stuff) and then mixed it into the batch of heated milk. I poured
it into the plastic containers I had leftover from previous purchases
of yogurt or kefir from the farm. I set a tea towel on the counter and
put my heating pad in the middle of it on low, then placed the
containers in the middle of that and wrapped all up with the tea towel
and secured with some chip clips at the top. It was a nice cozy
cocoon. I never measured the temp but trusted that since it felt warm
to my hand and not hot that it was ok. I left it overnight (I wrapped
it up at about 6pm so it was a little over 12 hours) and this morning I
unwrapped it to find thick creamy tangy cream on the top yogurt. I
took a whisk and mixed it all up so the cream was incorporated and
popped them in the fridge (after putting a big dollop on my pancakes
and applesauce). MMMMMMM good!

Hi Erika - thanks for posting.  Feel free to pass my message on to Christina.

Hi Christina,
You are right that what you eat can greatly impact your fertility.  I offer guidelines for choosing foods that enhance fertility (which I attached for you) to all of my fertility patients that see me for acupuncture.

The endocrine system is affected by the foods we eat, the amount of light we get, the quality of sleep we get, and more.  Acupuncture and eating real food are the two best ways I know to balance hormones that are related to fertility.

Feel free to call me if you would like a free fertility consultation in my Annapolis office.  This offer is open to anyone.

Does anyone here know if the hormones in dairy products and meats can affect human fertility? I've had fertility issues (unbalanced hormones) for years now and it just dawned on me that perhaps the foods I eat might have something to do with it?

Thanks for any info you might be able to share.

Christina

Sharon, and everybody else,

Hi.  We do most of the same co-ops you do, plus Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, and Washington's Green Grocer, who may be the provider of the "food box" you referred to.

I'm not sure if this qualifies as spam.  It isn't meant to be.  I just wanted to add a suggestion for how to get away from buying from the grocery store.  We belong to a co-op, actually a buying club.  We are called Sunshine co-op, and if you want to look into it, the website is http://www.sunshinecoop.org/ .  The club purchases food from  United Northeast Foods.  They are a supplier for Whole Foods, Sun and Earth, and other health food stores around.  You can also start your own buying club, if you have enough people who will order, and a location to which the truck can deliver.  I'm not sure if we pay what the local health food stores pay, or more.  If we do pay more, I'm not sure if it's much more, given what the small-volume local stores seem to have to charge to make a profit.

Right now, we're meeting the truck deliveries at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on College Parkway in Arnold.  We've outgrown the space, but have no other options that are convenient to everyone in the group right now.  People come from as far away as Pasadena to the north, to Davidsonville in the south.  One of our members, who orders occasionally, drives in from her home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  A couple of the members are homeschoolers, with strong, helpful kids, who cheerfully help you carry stuff to your car.

Basically, most packaged goods that you can buy at Whole Foods, you can probably get from United Northeast (UNFI).  This stuff ranges from grocery items, to lightbulbs and trashbags and toilet paper, to yoga matts and organic socks.  Some stuff is priced the same, some stuff is cheaper than Whole Foods.  However, you can still buy things that Whole Foods discontinues carrying, ie. Brown Cow Farms whole milk coffee yogurt, or Tushies diapers.  And, the more people who buy during a given month, or rather, the greater the total purchase for the club, the greater the discount for everyone.  We have a lot of big orderers as it is, so it is well worth it to join us.

If you factor in the discount, even after the fee, you will probably wind up spending less than at Whole Foods.  The fee is $5/month or $25/year.  If you order enough to hit the yearly amount, the coordinator stops charging you a monthly fee.  So, the fee is a maximum of $25 for the whole year.

There is a south county homeschooling family who raises rare breeds of chickens and sells eggs to the co-op as well.  You may know the mother, Ginger Houston-Ludlam.  She is an expert on kefir, and other such things, as far as I know.

In February or March, UNFI will start carrrying Shiloh Farms sprouted grain flour, which they're doing because I suggested it.  So, if there are items you want but they don't carry, if you persuade them, they will get it.

What we spent on food this year

First - I wanted to say that if anyone hasn't attended Cara Bergman's Nourishing your Children presentation she holds periodically, you are really missing a lot of good information. Even if you think you know a lot of it, there is still more to learn. For example! I learned from Cara about using vinegar for deoderant. I'm tellin' ya - it works awesome. I have always had a very difficult time with finding a deoderant that worked consistently and always had to change brands; I even could not wear some fabrics (mainly synthetic) because it seemed to cause almost an allergic response. Since I have been using vinegar (several weeks now ), I have had no issues whatsoever. It's a lot cheaper too! I told this to a colleague of mine and she has been using it as well with the same results. So, if you are tired of spending $4 for deoderants, try this.

Also, I have added up all the money we have spent buying food from Dan, Polyface, Zooks, our food boxes, the farmer's markets, Whole Foods, Giant and Trader Joes to see if our food expense really had increased due to buying all fresh and local food (or as much as possible). We are averaging $450 a month for food expenses. I know we use to spend between $100 and $180 a week at Giant - so it is about the same - except a lot of the money went to our local economy.

A breakdown: Zooks (who we don't really buy from a lot): $521.44; Rainbow Farms: $1619.77; Polyface: $600; Food box: $300, Whole Foods/Giant/Trader Joes and Farmers Markets: $2432.00.

It's hard to get completely away from the grocery store, but what we buy is definitely more seasonal and we try as buy as local as possible (thank goodness for Pennsylvania!).
Sharon

The topic for tomorrow's meeting will be Traditional Foods and Mental Health.  It is the same topic as the annual Weston A. Price conference which I just got back from and I will share my findings.

Last month Priscilla did an amazing job presenting Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride's GAP diet at our last meeting.  Dr. Campbell McBride just came out with her new book on heart disease which I will bring for you all to look at.

Once you are in Quiet Waters, follow the signs to the dogpark and park.  We will meet where we normally do by the concert stage.  I have no idea what the weather will be like because I just flew in from San Fran an hour ago, but dress appropriately.

Come with kids, questions, whatever.  See you tomorrow.

I haven’t tried this but thought I would pass it on:

    Homemade Yogurt

I like to make my own yogurt. I have found that placing my quart jar on a coffee-mug/candle warmer during the incubation period keeps it at a perfect 110 degrees!

    Dear Friends and Family,

I am pleased to announce that I have started my own practice as a trained Green Irene Eco-Consultant for the Annapolis area. I help families implement proven green solutions and help lead them to a healthier, safer, and more sustainable lifestyle, along with saving them money!

The main service I offer is a 60-to 90-minute Green Home Makeover. The steps I recommend and the products I offer, as well as referrals to specialists, can help save you energy and water. I can also help improve your indoor air quality, remove toxic chemicals from your home, reduce the waste you generate (which ends up in landfills) and improve the purity of the water your family drinks.

After I have finished the consultation, I will show you tips and products to make your home healthier. I can help you replace your wasteful incandescent bulbs, install low-flow shower heads, upgrade your thermostat, install carbon monoxide detectors and show you toxic-free cleaning options. There are many other green options I offer, which you can find in my online product catalog.

Along with the Green Home Makeover, you will receive a six-month “Ask Green Irene” Membership. This extensive, green database allows you to research green questions that may arise after the initial Green Home Makeover. It also allows you the ability to email questions to a Green Irene researcher for an answer to any green question not yet covered in the database.

***SPECIAL LAUNCH OFFER*** I am offering a 50% discount off the Green Home Makeover consultation fee for the first five booked appointments completed before the end of 2008!

In addition to my green home consulting practice (Green Home Makeovers, GO GREEN parties and EZ Bulb Swap Outs), I am proud to announce that you can now purchase green home products through my personal web store, which has recently launched!

The green home products you will find in my store include dimmable CFLs, stainless steel water bottles, low flow shower heads, toxic-free cleaners and carbon monoxide detectors, just to name a few. These products will help you conserve energy and water, improve your home water purity, reduce waste and help keep you safe and prepare you for emergencies.

You can enter my web store now through my website, www.GreenIrene.com/terriannapolis (click on the SHOP NOW icon). Feel free to browse the 12 different home categories or search my web store with keywords. You can purchase any of the items at anytime as well as reorder items. If you have any questions about any of the products, please email me at terri.annapolis@....

For those of you outside of the Annapolis area who can't take advantage of my in-person Green Home Makeover, I welcome you to visit my website and take a look at the products available (HINT: holiday gifts!!).  I can also help you find out if there is another Green Irene Eco-Consultant who may be local to you.

I look forward to talking with you soon about steps you can take for a healthier, greener home!

    Sincerely,
