Friends,
I am friends with the Uncle of two victims of the Shooting at Nickel
Mines School in Pennsylvania. He is my farmer for my Raw Dairy Co-op.
His 13 year old neice died and his 6 year old neice is still in
critical condition. I wanted to let everyone know how they could show
support for the Amish girls and their families who were victim's of
Monday's school shooting.
1) Make a contribution. A fund for the Amish girls and their families
has been set up at Coatesville Savings Bank, a local bank that works
regularly with the Lancaster Amish community. These funds will help
the farming families deal with hospital and continuing care costs for
their daughters. Please join us in sharing our love with a gift of any
size. The fund is in the name of the church elders.
You may mail your contribution to:
Nickel Mines Children's Fund
Coatesville Savings Bank
1082 Georgetown Road
Paradise, PA 17562
Phone: 717-786-8800
We have been working with the community to demonstrate our support in
ways that respect the traditions of the Amish community. The above
gesture will be appreciated by the families and their community.
Thank you very much for your kindness. Every show of support means a
lot to the family.
Thanks so much! God Bless!
I often get the question "what can I do?" from people who want to
help make raw milk more available or who want to help in the fight
against NAIS. It is a great question and, up till now, difficult to
answer, in part because there was not an organized force to take on
the General Assembly. Now, I have an answer to all of you who have
ever asked that question to me or to yourself. You can join this
group! This will be our central point; it will be our support and
our framework. We will speak and our state WILL hear our voices.
We know that choosing what we eat is a fundamental freedom that we
do not have full flexibility to enjoy. By coming together, we can
accomplish more than any of us could on our own. We are a community
and need to stand as one. As always, feel free to e-mail me with
any questions you have liz@... you can also e-mail Melissa at

Maryland Independent Consumers' and Farmers' Association
We see a state that allows unregulated farmer-to-consumer sales of
raw dairy. Maryland will lead the way in promoting on-farm sales of
raw milk. A few years from now there will be amazement that raw
dairy was ever so tightly controlled. Everyone will know the
multiple health benefits of consuming raw milk. Naturally, there
will be a move toward supporting small farms that provide this
amazing food and protecting land which sustains the milk-producing
cows. It will take time and effort, but we know it will happen. And
we know it is a matter of time before it is available in all the
states that currently forbid it.
Pasteurization for distribution of milk became mandatory in Maryland
on July 1, 1972. Yet dairy shares were a legal way to have raw
milk, until April of this year, when the Maryland Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene proposed an amendment to the Code of
Maryland Regulations to redefine a cow or other dairy animal share
as a "sale of raw milk" thus making cow shares illegal as well. Due
in part to the Weston A. Price Foundation, interest in raw milk has
soared over the past several years, and Marylanders are showing an
increased attention and appetite for this wonderful food. In
response to this increase in demand, government agencies have
increased their efforts to eliminate our right to have it. The
government's usurpation of our food choices is not acceptable. We
take the stand that every Maryland citizen deserves access to raw
milk from the producer of their choice, and we want each of you to
stand with me and do whatever you can. You have been sent this
letter because you already know raw dairy has made a difference in
your life or in the life of a loved one, and you are in a position
to make a huge difference!
Another serious threat facing small farms, farmers and consumers is
the USDA's proposed National Animal Identification System (NAIS).
The USDA wants to microchip and track every livestock animal on
every farm in the United States and register every premises where
such an animal lives or passes. The exorbitant cost of this program
would put small farmers out of business. Without small farms, the
products we have grown accustomed to would cease to exist. While
this benefits huge agri-business, it will destroy small farmers. We
take the stand that we will not accept NAIS in our state.
We are starting MICFA—Maryland Independent Consumers' and Farmers
Association—modeled after VICFA—Virginia Independent Consumers' and
Farmers Association, and we ask you to work with us to change the
laws in Maryland. Bit by bit, the state has taken away our right to
obtain farm foods by crafting regulations that eliminate our
choices. They are subtle and sneaky. We want to be bold and clear
as we stand for what we believe in. Please join us in this battle
by becoming a member of MICFA. We will soon be meeting with our
delegates with some sample legislation for unregulated on-farm dairy
sales and legislation to keep NAIS out of Maryland. The members of
the General Assembly need to know how important this is to their
constituents, (that means you folks), and the formality of an
incorporated organization gives us a strength we do not have
individually.
The MICFA mission statement is:
To promote and preserve unregulated direct farmer-to-consumer trade
that fosters availability of locally grown or home-produced food
products.
We want to acknowledge you for what you are already committed
to. In going out of your way to support farmers and get raw dairy,
you are taking a stand for your own health, the health of the
environment and, most probably, for someone you love. We ask you to
take your commitment a step further. By taking a stand with MICFA,
you create a community and with it a world of possibility for
yourself and future generations.
Our membership dues are $25 per year to defray the costs of formal
incorporation and associated costs of maintaining a formal
organization. Please go to www.micfa.net to print out a membership
form and send it in. Once you become a member, you will
automatically be put on our information/action alert list and our
mailing list for our newsletter.
For members and non-members, we will maintain an e-mail
list for information and action alerts. Actions might take the form
of calling your legislators, writing e-mails, and going to the
General Assembly in Annapolis.
This is going to be a wild adventure and we look forward to sharing
it with each of you.
Sincerely,
Liz Reitzig, President
Melissa Cohen, Vice President

Dairying on the historic grounds of Britain's Windsor Castle
Adrian Tomlinson rubs shoulders with royalty in his job as the
Queen's Ayrshire herdsman
BY IAN GUMMING
Ontario Farmer staff
Adrian Tomlinson has been herdsman for the Queen of Engl and 's
Ayrshire herd at Windsor Castle for 17 years. The 43-year-old dairy
farmer's son from Cheshire had answered an advertisement back then
and during the interview "hit it off' with the farm manager who told
him right then and there the job was his.
It's meant over the past decade and a half that the Queen has stuck
her head through his back door, or rapped on the window, when she's
seen an unattended cow calving in the pasture, or on the bedding
pack.
"All cattle are registered in her name, with the prefix of
Windsor ," said Tomlinson. All herd events, including placings at
shows, are filed in regular reports to her.
It's meant farming within a 15,000 acre estate guarded by the
nation's army - 2,500 acres being intensely farmed for a Jersey and
Ayrshire herd, along with a beef herd, sheep flock, valuable horses
and cash crop.
It's meant working with great cattle - where money is not an
object -
in the midst of one of the most hallowed, historic spots in Britain.
All of this isn't lost on Tomlinson as he drives around the
estate
enthusiastically showing the Jersey farm that Queen Victoria built
in the 1860's, the Frogmore House, where they found 600 year old
murals on the walls after they had taken off the plaster, or the
mausoleum where so many of the nation's royalty is buried; including
Queen Victoria and her husb and Prince Albert.
It's also meant working with people who take pride in their
professions and in their nation's history.
Just across the yard from where Tomlinson and his family live is the
smaller stone house where the last Ayrshire herdsman stays. He's 92
years of age and a war veteran. As the story goes, he weighed 80
pounds, despite st and ing six feet tall, when freed as a war
prisoner and had been nursed back to health there at a special
facility on the Windsor Castle grounds.
He started working with the cattle and then stayed. His employers
are looking after him for life as thanks for his service.
Other houses on the Castle grounds are for the head groom, farm
manager, the furniture polisher and restorer, the Jersey herdsman,
coachman, tractor drivers and gardeners, with the list being a lot
larger. Tomlinson's wife, giving birth to their first child five
weeks ago, is Windsor Castle secretary.
The Jersey herd, "is the oldest existing one in the world," said
Tomlinson. Queen Victoria had been given six Jerseys as presents
back in the 1840s and , with accurate pedigrees kept since then, a
lot of the herd traces back to them, he said.
There had been Ayrshires up at Balmoral Castle for the same amount
of time, but they weren't moved down to Windsor until the reign of
the current Queen began, said Tomlinson.
Both herds, each with 180 milking cows, have a lot of Canadian
genetics, with about a 1,000 kg a cow difference between the herds
in production.
With the higher Jersey fat, which herd is the most profitable? "The
Ayrshires," Tomlinson answers with a wide grin.
Both herds are grazed, fed haylage and corn silage in a feed bunk
and the pelleted concentrate in the milking parlour. They are housed
on a bedding pack, which enhances cow comfort, but results in a
higher sec count than with the free stalls they had before, said
Tomlinson..
The cattle housing facilities are over 20 years old and Tomlinson
notes that new facilities "are under discussion." That would cer
tainly mean a move to TMR feeding, he says.
One of the most unique farm buildings, that will certainly re-main
unaltered, is the dairy built by Queen Victoria in 1861. With marble
counter tops imported from Russia cooled by water running through
them, milk was poured in the individual pans and then the cream was
separated. Beautiful carvings adorn the walls.
Although the building hasn't been used for 90 years everything has
been left as is and is polished every week, said Tomlinson.
What hasn't changed over the centuries is that these herds put raw
milk on the Royal family's and other consumers' tables, said
Tomlinson. The Queen drinks raw milk from her Jersey herd and when
Princes William and Harry were being educated at nearby Eton , "I
would bottle up some milk from the Ayrshire herd every day and run
it over to them."
A small ice cream st and in the tourist section of the grounds ad
vertised the product made from raw milk at Windsor , along with
humane cattle h and ling, and the lineup was long. Organic
agriculture isn't practiced at Windsor but rather at Prince Charles
Ayrshire heard in Gloucester , said Tomlinson
I still haven't gotten the information for the weekly farm delivery to Columbia and what did you come up with for the meals. At the very least I would like to get the coconut kefir to try.

I picked up some grains from you about 6 weeks ago. I just wanted you to know that I have become a kefir expert! I am really enjoying making and using the kefir and my health has improved also. The grains grow fairly quickly and I have been able to give them away to four other people already! I recently tried making kefir with raw milk and although I didn't like the taste as much, I'm convinced it's a superfood so I think I'll keep up with it.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate the gift of the kefir grains. Thanks for contributing to other peoples' well-being!

Hi
everyone! Im glad so many of you were interested in the
Columbia Delivery, it was great meeting
everyone last week too! I wanted to let everyone know that we would
like to start a Baltimore delivery next month.
The delivery/pick up would be in the Catonsville/Baltimore
area. If there is anyone interested please let me know!
Thanks Melissa
Cohen
Right now the delivery is in Columbia...Off of Route 29 South, take
Seneca/Shaker Drive. Off the exit, take a left and go over bridge (rt
29) at stop sign take a left. This road is parallel with 29. Follow to
Allview Drive. Make a right onto Allview Drive. Its the second house on
the right. Youll need to make your first right to get to the back of her
house where her driveway is. The pick ups are every Tuesday between 3:30
and 7:00pm..
We are still discussing the day and time of the delivery for
Catonsville. They will probably do a different day NOT Tuesday. The
time will most likely be 3pm to 7pm for pick up time. My home is
located at:
722 Dryden Drive
Baltimore, MD 21229
I am off of Route 40 just over the Baltimore County/City Line. I
consider it Catonsville. I am in an area called Huntingridge across
Route 40 from Ten Hills. I am off of Winans Way which is off of Route
40 just past where Route 40 and Edmunson Avenue merge together (near
Cooks Lane).
From 695 you could take Edmunson Ave go approx 2 miles when Edmunson
and Route 40 merge, its the third light, turn left. Thats Winans Way.
At stop sign turn right on Dryden Drive.
Hope that helps!

Anyone in the co-op that delivers to Columbia would need to join CARE
CARE: Communities Alliance for Responsible Eco-Farming
By becoming a member of CARE you are reserving the right to buy wholesome unprocessed foods that are not irradiated, pasteurized, ultra-pasturized, or homogenized which is the current trend.
By becoming a member of CARE you are supporting your local farmers that practice methods that will bring back more birds and wildlife and other animals that will enhance the eco-system by depending less and less on harmful chemicals and pesticides and food additives.
The membership is $10.00 per year to become a community member. You receive a quarterly newsletter. The farmers pay $75 per year and agree to the monthly CARE quality testing standards, etc. And must request that all consumers buying dairy products become a member.
The man who delivers for us is from DC and was hired by one of the CARE members NOT by the farmer.
This is how we are able to take advantage of this wonderful service! Thanks, Melissa Cohen

i think the maryland law is about selling, not buying. the farmer is in
PA. it would be like buying something over the phone or internet in PA
(where its legal to sell) and then having a friend drive it down to
maryland. transport of raw dairy across state line is ok, it's not
contraband. I'm sure the NSA and FBI are monitoring this discussion.

I'm interested in the farm goods. I live in Ellicott City, so Catonsville would be great for me.
I occasionally buy from the farmer that delivers to Towson, but that's quite a ways away.
I would also be interested in kefir making classes and other similar topics (for example, kombucha),
but I'm not available this weekend.

everyone know it was out there. The farm is an Amish farm in PA,
he
has RAW milk, cream, sour cream, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, whey,
colostrum, spelt bread, beef, chicken, pork and eggs. (he has
organic
popcorn too!)If anyone is interested let me know.
Once enough people join in, I am hoping to start a delivery in
Baltimore/Catonsville area as well. You can email me at
Hi Melissa, there's already one to the Towson area (from the
sound of it, may even be the same folks) -- does Baltimore really need
two of 'em? On the other hand, those of us out here in Westminster
would looooooovvve to have a raw milk delivery! Any
chance you could entice your Amish contact up this-a-way...???
:-) All he's gotta do is head up Route 32 or 97 (not Interstate
97) on his way back to PA. Or down, if that's easier for him.
Many thanks,
Tom
