Hi Everyone,
Uffe Ravnskov, M.D., Ph.D. is here from Sweden,
speaking in Washington, D.C., Annapolis, MD and
Boston, MA from May 15 - 23 about his findings
published in his book "The Cholesterol Myths -
Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and
Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease".
Dr. Ravnskov, and over 30 other scientists, have been
studying and tracking the scientific data on the
Diet-Heart Theory for decades. Dr. Ravnskov reports
that there is significant scientific data disproving
the theory that saturated fat and cholesterol cause
heart disease and that high blood cholesterol levels
are dangerous to your heart.
Dr. Ravnskov cites a few examples of the results of
those studies:
- Many studies have shown that people whose blood
cholesterol is low become just as atherosclerotic as
people whose cholesterol is high
- Our bodies produce 3-4 times more cholesterol
than we eat. The production of cholesterol increases
when we eat a small amount of cholesterol-rich foods
and it decreases when we eat a large amount. This is
why the diets that are recommended cannot lower
cholesterol by more than, on average, a few percent
- More than 20 studies have shown that people who
have had a heart attack haven't eaten more fat of any
kind than other people, and the degree of
athersclerosis at autopsy is unrelated to the diet
- Cholesterol is not a deadly poison, but a
substance vital to the cells of all mammals. A high
blood cholesterol level is not dangerous by itself.
It may or may not though, reflect an unhealthy
condition
- Neither heart mortality nor total mortality have
been improved with cholesterol-lowering drugs. On the
contrary, many studies have shown that the
cholesterol-lowering drugs may be shortening people's
lives
- The new cholesterol-lowering drugs, the statins,
do prevent cardiovascular disease, but this is due to
mechanisms other than cholesterol-lowering mechanisms
Dr. Ravnskov also states that:
- Many of these facts have been presented in
scientific journals and books for decades but are
rarely told to the public
- The reason why laymen, doctors and most
scientists
have been misled is because opposing and disagreeing
results are systematically ignored or misquoted in the
scientific press
Dr. Ravnskov has published over 50 articles and
letters disputing the Diet-Heart Hypothesis in
international medical journals such as The Lancet, The
British Medical Journal, The Journal of Clinical
Epidemiology and in Scandinavian medical journals.
Dr. Ravnskov will be presenting his findings in a
series of lectures scheduled for the East Coast from
May 15 - 23.
