BACKGROUND:

Cow-shares are similar to CSA's (Community Supported Agriculture) in that you are purchasing a share, in this case of an animal, along with other consumers, to declare ownership of the raw milk and of the raw dairy products in order to consume them in the state of Maryland.  Cow-shares are a pathway to expanding on-farm processing opportunities for farmers, and food choices for consumers, and ultimately in Maryland, a certified raw dairy program.

The State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is trying to prevent a certified raw milk opportunity in Maryland, by trying to make cow-shares illegal in the state.  They are trying to do this as an "emergency" without an appropriate hearing, and in defiance of Maryland law, which allows the consumption of raw milk and guarantees the right to own a portion of an animal and enter into boarding agreements.
