The network is intended to be a forum for subscribers to share ideas, new research and other information on mental health promotion and social wellbeing. The network is particularly focused on the social and economic influences on mental health and wellbeing, and takes a population health approach to the issues.
This network is not intended to be a forum for the discussion of treatment and management of mental illness, or counselling services.
Within a health promotion framework, mental health is seen as not merely the absence of mental illness; it is fundamental to overall quality of life, productivity, physical health and positive personal, family and community relationships. In promoting mental health and wellbeing we recognise the importance of addressing these key social influences:
Social Inclusion - having supportive relationships and environments, feeling like you belong, being able to engage in social and physical activities, having a say about what you think is important, having social networks and a valued social position.
Freedom from discrimination & violence - feeling physically and emotionally safe from harm, having self-determination and control over your life.
Economic Participation - engaging in meaningful activity including skill development, education and work, having access to the money necessary to feed, clothe yourself and participate in community life.
