Special Guest Speaker: Greg Lawson, President of the Vegetarian Society
of El Paso (http://vsep.org/), National Speaker, Radio Host
Our guest at the January potluck will be Greg Lawson, President of the
Vegetarian Society of El Paso (Texax) and a National Park Service Ranger.

Greg went vegetarian in 1978 and was an early member of the Vegetarian
Society of East Tennessee back in 1983.   He went vegan ten years ago
and was lead journalist for Animal Rights Online during the 1990's.
He is a regular writer for Animals Voice magazine and for the last five
years has done an animal rights/vegan oriented radio show, ACT, Animal
Concerns of Texas, on KTEP-FM, National Public Radio for the Southwest
(http://www.drstevebest.org/ACT/act.php,
http://www.ktep.org/listen.sstg).

He has been a featured speaker at the Farm Animal Reform Movement's annual
conference on wildlife issues since 2002. Ranger Greg will be demonstrating a
couple of his favorite tofu recipes and sharing stories of the effects of a
meat-based diet on the wildlife in our national parks and forests.

We will be showing the 2nd Part of Dr. John McDougall's talk on cow's
milk products (all forms of dairy) for humans vs. cows.
The 1st part had a lot of basic introductory material, along with some
important charts.    But, even if you missed the 1st part, the 2nd part
is loaded with very important information and you will not be lost or
unable to understand the context of the information.  The info is
strictly about health issues - nothing gross at all for the dinner
table!
I hope last month's attendees will return for "The Rest of the Story"
and many more will be inspired to attend - BRING YOUR FRIENDS and long-
lost members - because it is so critical to our health and especially
our children's lifetime health.   And, of course, it is critical for
the health of the dairy cow and her calves, who do not get their mom's
milk - though that's a topic for another showing!  I hope when the new
remake of Tribe of Heart's "Peaceable Kingdom" film finally is released
that we can find a way to have a showing of this superbly done film.
Please come to the potluck, enjoy the food & film, and hang around a

This is a reminder that our monthly potluck will be held this Sunday,
July 1.

There was a little confusion regarding the date due to the 4th of
July holiday.  However, since it is in the middle of the week, it
doesn't make sense to move our potluck to the following Sunday.

Since not everyone from Laura's mailing list has signed up for this
Yahoo Group, Laura will also be sending out a reminder.  So, you may
receive two e-mail reminders.

Cooking demonstration followed by a potluck supper at 6:00 PM at the
Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike,
Knoxville.

Please bring a vegan or vegetarian dish to share. Visitors and guests
are always welcome. There is a small fee to help offset the room
rental: $2 for members; $3 for non-members.

It is helpful for you to write down the ingredients in the vegetarian
dish you bring. This helps those with food sensitivities and vegans
with their eating selection.

I want to welcome each of you to our new mailing list.  This is your
list! We now have 23 members.

As a disclaimer, this e-mail isn't an "official" e-mail from the
Vegetarian Society of East Tennessee, but is sent by Viveca.

All members of this Yahoo group can send messages to this list.
However, it isn't meant to be used to discuss off topic messages such
as politics, sex, religion, etc.

I hope it will be used as a way to bring our Knoxville vegetarian
community together.  Although it would be nice if everyone is also a
member of the Vegetarian Society of East Tennessee, it isn't a
requirement.  This list is open to all vegetarians in the Knoxville
area.

I am not sure if I mentioned it or not, we have a calendar at our
Yahoo Group website.  We also have photo albums, a data base, a place
for files, a way to take polls, and a place for links.  Feel free to
upload pictures, links, recipes, etc.  I think I'll create a database
for the recipes.

This is a moderated list.  I have taken this precaution to prevent
our group from being solicited, to prevent massive quantities of junk
e-mail, etc.

Remember this list is also a great way for you to get together with
other members for social gatherings.  This way smaller groups can
meet to eat, take field trips, etc., without having to wait for our
next potluck or bi-monthly social.

You can find the link at the bottom of this e-mail for our Yahoo
Group.  If you do not want to receive individual posts, you can
select digest version or can choose to read the posts at the Yahoo
website, and not receive any posts in your inbox at all.  If you need
help doing this, feel free to send me your request, and I'll be happy
to do this for you.

I know this next month will be busy since we have Earth Fest and the
Great American Meatout (see our Yahoo calendar & website for
details).  Also, let Laura know if you can help out at either of

Please join us for another great offering from our own
Linda Capps who will create a wonderful Indian spiced soup
called Dahl.  It is traditionally made with mung beans, but
split peas and lentils work well too.  It will be served over
seasoned rice.  Linda is one of our valued board members
who has graced our table many times with her down to earth
delicious recipes.

We will begin at 6 p.m. at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist
Church on Kingston Pike in Knoxville. Following the demo, we will share
a vegan/vegetarian potluck supper.  Please bring a vegan or vegetarian
dish to share.

There will be a small collection of money to help offset the room
rental.  Cost is $2 for members and $3 for guests.
