Men Can Stop Rape, a national leader in engaging men in the prevention
of violence against women, is excited announce that the next "From
Theory To Practice" Strength training will be held July 16-18, 2009, in
Washington, DC! We invite you to join the hundreds of participants in
the last 10 years who are now better equipped to engage men as allies in
sustainable efforts in preventing violence against women.
I just wanted to express my sincere appreciation once again for the
outstanding training, I am so grateful for the opportunity. I am still
pumped up and it is Monday afternoon.
--Harold Boyd, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Fleet and Family
Support Centers of Hampton Roads, January 2009
I think you all did a great job, it was really smooth and
well-integrated.
Thank you for creating an open, safe, educational environment that was
also fun.
--January 2009 training participant
From Theory To Practice is MCSR?s most comprehensive training, and
begins by exploring the theory behind engaging men of all ages in
developing healthier models of masculinity. Participants will experience
and learn the exercises and approaches that have made MCSR's Strength
Mediaworks, Men of Strength Clubs, and Campus Strength program the
leaders in the effort to create cultures free from violence, especially
men's violence against women. They will also explore new and innovative
strategies to build the capacity of men and boys in their communities to
prevent violence against women by being active bystanders and changing
cultures.
Past participants have included rape crisis and domestic violence center
personnel looking for ways to engage men on the primary prevention of
men's violence against women; US military sexual assault response
coordinators; youth-serving professionals searching for better ways to
teach boys about healthy masculinity and positive relationships;
activist men strategizing new ways to engage men and boys in their
community on role modeling strength without violence, and many, many
others!
Training objectives include:
-Become more aware of the "Dominant Stories" of masculinity and better
understand the importance of "Counterstories," and how these relate to
violence against women.
-Explore the challenges of engaging men and learn effective ways to
overcome these barriers.
-Learn how men can be mobilized to become better allies with women.
-Strategize with others about how to involve men in our work.
-Build skills for speaking with men about sexism.
-Learn how to better assist men in connecting sexism to other forms of
oppression.
-Provide participants with practice responses to common reactions and
questions from male audiences.
When: July 16-18, 2009, from 9am to 5pm each day. We require full
participation all three days! On Thursday evening we will also offer the
option of eating dinner together, which is not required but most
participants choose to join.
Where: Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Avenue NW,
Washington, DC.
Fee: Our fee is $500, which includes the full three-day training,
breakfast each day, and MCSR's training manual. It does not include
travel or lodging.
We have also arranged for discounted rates of $139 per night the Hyatt
Regency for participants.
From Theory to Practice training usually fills up very quickly, and
