The Virginia Campus Coalition Against Sexual Assault presents its first in a
series of webinars to address training issues for personnel on Virginia's
college campuses on the issue of sexual violence. A webinar is an
opportunity to attend a workshop by watching a presentation from your
computer screen using only your regular internet connection while listening
in on your phone. If for some reason you are unable to connect via your
computer, you can print out slides of presentations from the VDH website
about four days before the event and listen along on the phone. No
preregistration required for this event - just log on September 26th about
10 minutes before the event.

This webinar is relevant for campus personnel and community advocates who
want to know more about using evaluative and collaborative measures to
develop a public awareness campaign. This webinar will include:

1) An overview the core elements of The Red Flag Campaign
2) An explanation of the collaborative and evaluative processes used to
develop the campaign, including focus groups and pre-/post-surveys;
3) An example of partnerships forged between the statewide coalition,
campuses and local programs

1 in 5 college students report violence by a current partner.1 The Red Flag
Campaign is an innovative bystander intervention campaign designed to
address and promote the prevention of dating violence among college
students. The campaign features a series of posters, an online resource
center (www.TheRedFlagCampaign.org), and an extensive Red Flag Campaign
Campus Planning Guide.

The campaign poster series depicts racially and ethnically diverse students,
as well as students in same-sex relationships, and addresses a wide spectrum
of indicators for dating violence, including stalking, jealousy, isolation,
sexual assault, emotional abuse, victim-blaming and coercion. The online
resource center offers college students helpful information related to
preventing dating violence, the hallmarks of healthy relationships, and how
to access support and crisis services, if needed. The Campus Planning Guide
provides concrete suggestions for maximizing the impact of The Red Flag
Campaign, how to use the campaign to enhance current campus programming, and
how to build new campus events around it. Specific attention is given to
spreading the word by involving groups, such as resident advisors, faculty
and staff, athletes, fraternities and sororities, student groups, and other
campus service organizations.

The campaign was created collaboratively by the Virginia Sexual & Domestic
Violence Action Alliance, college students and campus personnel, and
community victim advocates, in partnership with the Verizon Foundation. The
campaign has been recognized nationally, including as a model "Innovative
Coalition to Address Sexual Assault and Dating Violence" by the U.S.
Department of Education's Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and
Violence Prevention.

The Red Flag Campaign is particularly innovative in the area of evaluation,
which has been emphasized throughout the entire development of the campaign.
Focus groups were used to identify college students' feelings about and
experiences with dating violence and to test messages and images of the
posters. Pre/post surveys were used to evaluate college students' reaction
to the campaign during the pilot. The Campaign's evaluative components were
featured in an article on VAWnet (Violence Against Women Net-November 2007)
that highlighted promising practices in evaluating public awareness
campaigns.
