Description
The investigation and prosecution of sexual assault is often one of the most
intense, extensive, and critical undertakings of the criminal justice
system. Right From the Start inspires to provide valuable information from a
spectrum of professionals to enhance understanding of victims, offenders,
medical evidence, and use of DNA in the investigation and prosecution of
sexual assault.
Goals and Objectives
Attendees will learn:
. The victim's experience of the system and tools to make the system less
traumatic and more effective;
. To understand the behaviors, patterns, and manipulations of sexual
offenders and how to interview more effectively;
. The importance of the sexual assault exam and how to identify and document
findings for best legal results;
. The CODIS system of DNA identification and how to make it work for your
agency;
. Prosecution strategies and issues, to facilitate building the case for a
successful prosecution.
Who Should Attend?
This training is designed to be useful for anyone in the sexual assault
field, including nurses, prosecutors, advocates, investigators, law
enforcement, physicians, and anyone hoping to advance the cause of victims.

8:30 - 12 p.m. - "Your Best Witness: The Victim" - Deb Smith will give an
evocative description of her own rape and process through the system,
offering advice to investigators and victims both, while Rob Smith will
describe the experience as a law enforcement officer and husband. (Break
from 10:30 - 10:45 am)
12 - 1 p.m. Box Lunch Provided
1 - 4:30 p.m. - "Understanding the Sexual Offender" - Dr. Valliere will
provide practical information on the behaviors and deviance of sexual
offenders, interviewing techniques, and understanding the impact on the
victim. (Break from 2:30 - 2:45 p.m.)

"When Injuries Speak: The Role of the Forensic Examiner in Identifying and
Documenting Wounds in Reported and/or Suspected Assault" - Dr. Dan Sheridan
will offer techniques for improving forensic documentation, both written and
photographic, of patients/clients/victims with possible abuse-related
injuries.
"DNA and CODIS: Putting it all together" - Dr. Tom Callaghan will give
practical advice and information to assist investigators on how the CODIS
system works, the state of DNA today, and integrating the two to facilitate
prosecution.
"Prosecuting the Non-Stranger Sexual Assault" - Jennifer Long will present
on strategies and techniques for investigating and prosecuting the most
complicated assault case of all, the non-stranger assault, including issues
of alcohol facilitation, intimate partner, and jury selection and education.
