Women's Health Virginia will be hosting its 11th Annual Conference on
Women's Health on Friday, June 13, Stepping Over the Lines--Young Women's
Risk-Taking, Time for Concern. It will focus on behaviors in which girls
and young women engage that pose significant health and wellness concerns,
and ways in which health professionals, educators, parents, peers and others
can help girls and young women develop healthier behavior and get help when
needed. The day-long program will be at Alumni Hall in Charlottesville.
We believe the conference will be of interest to health and education
professionals, parents, mentors, community organization leaders and others
who are concerned about girls, teens and young women. Women's Health
Virginia is applying for continuing education credits for physicians (AAFP),
nurses, dietitians, social workers and CHES. We will provide certificates
of attendance to other conferees who wish to use the program to meet
continuing education requirements.
As you can see from the attached schedule, speakers will discuss current
knowledge about why young people engage in such behaviors, including current
research on brain development; behaviors regarding sexuality and
relationships; the quest for perfection in academics, athletics and
appearance; violence, gang participation and other criminal acts; and
substance use and abuse; and best practices for intervention; available
resources and programs that address these concerns.
The luncheon keynote speaker will be Laura Sessions Stepp, Pulitzer
Prize-winning journalist who specializes in covering teenagers and young
adults for the Style section of The Washington Post and author of Unhooked:
How Young Women Pursue Sex, Delay Love and Lose at Both

In addition to the schedule, we are attaching a flier and the registration
form. We hope that you will post the flier if you have appropriate places
and distribute it, so that even more people can learn about this important
program. The cost, including materials, lunch, parking & continuing
education credits is $75, $40 for students. Registration with a credit card
is also available online at www.womenshealthvirginia.org
<http://www.womenshealthvirginia.org/> or by telephone at 434-220-4500.
