As we know, sometimes the criminal justice system is not as satisfactory for
victims of crime as we would want it to be. I have asked the Civil Legal Bar of
the National Center for Victims of Crime to present a full-day (and free)
training for advocates and law enforcement to better enable us to both
understand the civil process and explain its advantages and disadvantages to
victims/survivors that we are assisting. I have attached a preliminary flier
with registration information. All presenters will be attorneys who specialize
in civil cases with victims of crime. When I have the complete list of
attorneys who will be presenting on December 5th, I'll send out another flier.
But now is the time to register! Hope to see you here.

If you can’t answer these questions, how can a victim?
• What do victims gain through civil actions?
• What civil options are available to victims?
• Where can victims find a lawyer?
• What is the appropriate role of a victim service provider?
Civil justice provides victims with an important affirmation of the harm they
suffered and offers them a level of participation and control that may not be
available or appropriate in a criminal prosecution. Civil actions also offer
victims indemnification for the damages they have suffered and the resources to
rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, many victims, service providers, and other
professionals are not fully aware of the availability and potential of civil
legal remedies for crime victims. This seminar will examine civil remedies for
victims of homicide, domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, child sexual
abuse, drunk driving, identity theft and other crimes

Comments from previous attendees of “Civil Justice for Victims of Crime”:
“Really enjoyed the presenter. He kept my attention the entire time. He was very
compassionate and excited about helping victims.”
“It is important for every player to know the rules of the game and these
presenters were great coaches!”
“Presentation was great. Explained material without too much lawyer jargon.”
“Very helpful; as a mental health therapist I feel that I don’t have a lot of
opportunities to even understand the basics of litigation and court process and
it is better to support my clients when I’m educated. Very comprehensive.”
