"Safe Dates"
2007 Curriculum Training Opportunity
The Division of Injury and Violence Prevention (DIVP) at the Virginia
Department of Health (VDH) announces a curriculum/program training
opportunity for public or private middle schools and high schools in
Virginia. This training opportunity is available to assist schools in
providing programming to students on Safe Dates: An Adolescent Dating Abuse
Prevention Curriculum. To be eligible for this training opportunity, the
school administration must commit to providing the Safe Dates program to
students during the 2007/2008 school year. Small grants of up to $300 will
be awarded to reimburse some expenses incurred in providing the program.
Goal
To provide a replicable, evaluated, model program for dating abuse
prevention, Safe Dates, to students attending seventy-five Virginia middle
and high schools via school and/or appropriate community agency personnel
who have received training from DIVP to present the curriculum and related
program activities. Community agencies likely to partner with schools to
provide Safe Dates include Sexual Assault Crisis Centers, Domestic Violence
Programs, and agencies that provide life-skills training for youth.
Background
In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly added "dating violence" to the topics
covered in Family Life Education curriculum guidelines. According to the
Family Violence Prevention Fund's "Promoting Prevention, Targeting Teens,"
youth ages 16 to 24 are the most at risk of domestic/dating violence of any
age group. Therefore, focusing attention on girls and boys age 10 to 15 can
stem violence among 16 to 24 year olds. Safe Dates is a dating abuse
prevention program that consists of four components: a nine-session dating
abuse curriculum, a play about dating abuse, a poster contest, and parent
materials.
Objectives
1. To ensure high-quality replication and implementation of a model program
though the participation of trained teachers/facilitators.
2. To bring school personnel, students, parents, and community members
together to work to prevent teen dating and sexual violence.
Requirements
1. The application must be received in the Virginia Department of Health,
Division of Injury and Violence Prevention by 5:00 pm on September 12, 2007.
Late applications will not be accepted.
2. Applications for training will be accepted in the following order:
- Applications that commit to participate in the teacher training and to
provide all four of the program components,
- Applications that commit to participate in the teacher training and to
provide the nine-session curriculum but who do not commit to the other three
program components, and
- Applications that commit to participate in the teacher training and to
provide the six-session condensed version of the curriculum.
If more than seventy-five applications are received the priorities noted
above will take precedence but the date and time that the application was
received will be an additional acceptance factor. As training space is
limited, applications should be submitted as soon as possible.
3. It is anticipated that notification regarding acceptance into the
training will be made by September 19, 2007.
4. School personnel or appropriate community agency personnel will present
or co-present the Safe Dates program. At least one but no more than two
persons representing a school will attend the DIVP training opportunity. The
three hour training will be offered the week of October 15-19, 2007, in
three localities throughout Virginia.*
5. Each school participating in the program will receive one copy of the
Safe Dates curriculum which retails for $195.
6. Personnel receiving training via DIVP may also involve additional
personnel to assist with program implementation.
7. The application form is provided as an attachment to this announcement.
It may be
submitted through the mail, e-mail, or hand-delivered.
8. Limited reimbursement for participating in the Safe Dates initiative will
range from $100-$300. Schools that participate in the teacher training and
provide all four of the program components will receive $300. Schools that
participate in the teacher training and provide the nine-session curriculum
but who do not complete the other three program components will receive
$200. Schools that participate in the teacher training and provide the
six-session condensed version of the curriculum will receive $100.
9. Program implementation must be completed by June 15, 2008.
10. A program report, the format of which will be provided by DIVP, must be
returned to DIVP no later than June 30, 2008. Reimbursement will be approved
for payment following the submission of the evaluation form.
Application
1. Provide the application clearly identifying the school and the contact
person that is requesting and approving the school's participation in the
curriculum/program training opportunity. Contact information must include;
school, school district, contact's name, title, mailing address, phone
number, fax number, and email.
2. If a community agency will be participating in the program
implementation, indicate the name of the agency and an agency contact.
Provide a brief description of the agency's mission and how it fits with the
goal of preventing dating and sexual violence.
3. Indicate the level at which the school intends to participate:
- Teacher training and to provide all four of the program elements,
- Teacher training and to provide the nine-session curriculum, or
- Teacher training and to provide the six-session condensed version of the
curriculum.
4. Provide the name(s) and contact information for the one or two school or
community agency personnel who will be attending the training the week of
October 15-19, 2007. Contact information must include; school or agency,
