Profiling the Campus Date Rapist: Inside the Research
Friday, January 26th 2007
1:00pm to 3:00pm Eastern Time
Presented by: Brett A. Sokolow, J.D. and David Lisak, Ph.D.

THE TOPIC

SHE SAID: April, a student at your university, comes to your office and
asks to report a sexual assault. She claims that another student, Kyle,
took advantage of her sexually the previous evening. She describes a night
of pressure at a campus party, repeated sexual advances, Kyle insisting on
walking her home, trying to resist him and finally, of being raped.

HE SAID: You summon Kyle to your office and question him about his behavior
with April the previous evening. Kyle convincing describes an evening of
casual drinking and serious flirtation. He was flattered when April invited
him back to her room. She was shy at first, but once intimacy began, she
was into it and clearly consented to what they did together.

The classic, "He Said - She Said" and we're left trying to figure out who
did what to whom. The accounts of these two students are bafflingly
dissimilar. How do we figure out what really happened? We may never know,
but researchers are diligently collecting and presenting data that might
help us to better understand the phenomenology of campus date rape.

One of the foremost of these researchers is Dr. David Lisak (see bio below).
Dr. Lisak's research is well-regarded and he is frequently called to consult
on high profile date rape cases. His work informs the U.S. Military as it
grapples with cultural issues of gender violence. He has framed a body of
research around the concept of undetected rapists. Some of his conclusions
will cause us to carefully re-examine our willingness to accept at face
value what "HE SAID."

According to Lisak's research, undetected rapists:
* Are extremely adept at identifying "likely" victims, and testing
prospective victims' boundaries;
* Plan and premeditate their attacks, using sophisticated strategies
to groom their victims for attack, and to isolate them physically;
* Use "instrumental" not gratuitous violence; they exhibit strong
impulse control and use only as much violence as is needed to terrify and
coerce their victims into submission;
* Use psychological weapons - power, control, manipulation, and
threats - backed up by physical force, and almost never resort to weapons
such as knives or guns;
* Use alcohol deliberately to render victims more vulnerable to
attack, or completely unconscious.
In addition, the majority of undetected rapists are serial rapists who also
commit other forms of serious interpersonal violence. In a study of 120
undetected rapists in the Boston area, 63% were serial rapists. These 76
serial rapists had, on average, attacked 14 victims, and were responsible
for:
* 439 rapes and attempted rapes
* 49 sexual assaults
* 214 acts of battery against intimate partners
In this webinar, Brett Sokolow will interview Dr. Lisak to help to
familiarize participants with his research, and will discuss with Dr. Lisak
how his findings apply to the work of student affairs administrators as we
endeavor to prevent and respond to campus sexual violence. Special emphasis
will be placed on these questions:

What implications do these findings have for the campus conduct process?
What implications do these findings have for how we approach educational
initiatives on prevention?
What implications do these findings have for how we educate our potential
victim population about risk reduction?
HOW A WEBINAR WORKS

Webinars are cost-effective because everything you need is already in your
office - a telephone and a computer. Webinars are large-group conference
calls where you can follow along online with our PowerPoint. You can even
project the PowerPoint via an LCD projector for group participation by your
staff. Each registrant can call in from one telephone line on campus, so
you might arrange to use a phone in a conference room, where your staff and
administrators can listen and participate via speakerphone. You can also
purchase additional lines for multiple campus call-in locations for a
moderate surcharge. You will receive a call-in 800 number and a PIN for the
day of the event. Once you join the call, you will be able to hear the
presenters and ask questions via phone, while viewing the Power Point
online.

INTENDED PARTICIPANTS:
* Student Affairs Administrators,
* Judicial Administrators, Hearing Officers and Boards
* University Counsels and Risk Managers,
* Residential Life Administrators,
* Campus Law Enforcement

David Lisak, Ph.D. is an associate professor of psychology at the University

adult men, and the relationship between early abuse and the later
perpetration of interpersonal violence. His research has been published in

the journal, Psychology of Men and Masculinity. In addition to his research
and teaching, Dr. Lisak is a consultant to judicial and prosecutor education
