Inspiring Strategies to Enlist Men and Boys as Allies in Gender
Violence Prevention
Join us in a teleconference
Thursday, December 7, 2006
12 - 1 p.m. Eastern Time
We are proud to present Jackson Katz, ED.M., One of America's leading
anti-sexist male Activists.
Jackson Katz, educator, author and filmmaker, is internationally
recognized for his groundbreaking work teaching gender violence
prevention to men and boys, particularly in sports culture and in the
military. He has lectured on hundreds of college and high school
campuses and has led hundreds of professional trainings, seminars and
workshops in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Japan. Mr. Katz is the
co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, the
leading gender violence prevention initiative in professional and
college athletics; director of the first worldwide domestic and sexual
violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps; and
creator and co-creator of educational videos for college and high
school students.
Agenda:
(The following are strategies that Mr. Katz and his colleagues have
developed and implemented with men and boys, which he will review on
this call):
1. Reframe domestic and sexual violence prevention as men's issues
2. Gender violence prevention as a leadership issue for men
3. Personalize the issues for men
4. Focus on men as bystanders (not as perpetrators or potential
perpetrators)
5. Address homophobia as a policing mechanism in male peer culture
6. Incorporate concepts of cultural competence into all prevention efforts
7. Make connections between gender violence and other issues (e.g.
homelessness, HIV/AIDS, alcoholism, "youth violence," etc.)
8. Incorporate media literacy into prevention strategies
