Breaking the Barriers to Assisting Older Victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence

VSDVAA and the Virginia Center on Aging are collaborating to offer this day-long
institute to address abuse in the elderly population. Speakers will train on:
domestic violence in later life; specific psychological, medical, and legal
issues regarding sexual assault of the elderly; housing and services for elders
who have been abused; interdisciplinary coalitions; and the development of
coordinated community response teams. Featured speakers include Sara Munzer of
the Abuse in Later Life Project of the Family Violence Program of Pitt County,
NC, Debby Weinstein, Executive Director of the YWCA-Charleston, WV, Sgt. Barbara
Walker with the VCU Police Department, Paula Kupstas of the Virginia Center on
Aging, Aly Cooper, formerly of the Virginia Center on Aging, and an 80-year-old
survivor who now volunteers for a local domestic violence program.
Intended audience: domestic violence and sexual assault advocates, advocates for
the elderly, allied professionals
Cost: $70 for members of the Action Alliance; $90 for nonmembers
