Key Elements Of An Effective Community Response To Sexual Violence

This training is intended for professionals who are interested in learning more
about sexual violence or who, through their work, offer services to victims of
sexual violence. Each session will address the seven key elements for providing
an effective response to sexual violence:
a.. Definition: Can you effectively identify sexual violence?
b.. Scope of the problem: Who is affected? Who perpetrates? How common is
sexual violence?
c.. Who's accountable? Who (or what institutions) do you hold responsible for
sexual violence?
d.. Laws: What do you know about sexual assault, stalking, and other relevant
laws?
e.. Societal factors that perpetuate sexual violence: What roles do sexism,
classism, racism, ableism and heterosexism play?
f.. Effects of sexual violence: How are individuals, relationships,
communities and our society affected?
g.. Collaboration: Who are your community partners in ending sexual violence?
Intended audience: staff of sexual and domestic violence programs and allied
professionals
Cost: $50 for members of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Action Alliance, $70
for nonmembers

Trainers
Sandy Hein has been a Police Officer with the City of Alexandria for 16 years.
For the past 12 years, she has worked in the Criminal Investigations Section.
During this assignment she worked for five years as a Youth Sex/Abuse Detective,
and three years as a Burglary Detective. She has been in her current assignment
with the Violent Crimes Unit for the past four years. Her primary
responsibility is the investigation of Adult Sex Crimes. Sandy is a certified
Instructor with the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Peggy Sullivan has worked for over fifteen years as the Community Outreach
Coordinator at ACTS/Turning Points in Prince William County. She was a VADV
board member and an original member of the VADV Training Institute. She is a
DELTA trainer and is also on Virginia's team for the PREVENT Institute. She
enjoys training volunteers, mediators, medical personnel, law enforcement and
other allied professionals on the dynamics and sensitive issues of domestic and
sexual violence.
CANCELLATION POLICY: If you are unable to attend this training, you may send
someone else in your place for no extra charge. If, however, you need to cancel
your registration, if you do so by July 8 your registration fee (minus a $15
processing fee) will be refunded. If you cancel after July 8, your registration
fee minus $35 will be refunded.
