Aging – What Went Wrong?
Richard W. Lindsay, MD
Dr. Lindsay is the Chairman of the Commonwealth Council on Aging
(Virginia’s statewide aging advisory board). He is Professor Emeritus
of Internal Medicine and Family Practice at the University of Virginia
in Charlottesville, Virginia and is the former Head of the Section of
Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Lindsay served as the President of the American
Geriatrics Society in 1985-86, and then Chairman of it Board of
Directors. He was appointed by Governor Warner as a delegate to the
2005 White House Conference on Aging.
This keynote address will assess the compression of morbidity and the
role of lifestyle modifications in successful aging. Dr. Lindsay will
also discuss a long-term care system that funds new technology but
shortchanges critical home and community-based services. Finally, Dr.
Lindsay will discuss the looming workforce crisis in the long-term care
and health system.

A. Meeting the Needs of Elders Following a Natural Disaster

This workshop will look at pre and post planning activities in
preparation for assisting older persons during and after a natural disaster.
B. Long Term Care: Is Your Family Protected?
George Vavases, CLU, Met Life/AARP Long-Term Care Insurance Consultant.
This workshop will discuss long-term care: what it is, the settings in
which it is provided, how much it costs, who pays for it, the services
available under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and the provisions
in long-term care insurance policies that consumers need to look for
when considering the purchase of a policy.
C. TRIAD: Empower Your Seniors!
Jennifer Hasty, Director, TRIAD and Citizen Outreach, the Office of
Virginia’s Attorney General.
Learn about one of the fastest growing senior citizen crime prevention
programs to sweep the nation. Learn how TRIAFD chapters across Virginia
are forming community partnerships that help prevent physical abuse,
financial abuse, and other means of exploiting older persons. You will
leave with information on how to get involved in your local TRIAD as a
way to prevent senior from becoming the victims of crimes, scams, and fraud.

D. Senior Resources for Financial Independence
Barbara Murphy, AARP, Senior Community Services Employment Program.
This workshop will discuss strategies that elders can use to promote
their financial
independence. The Senior Community Services Employment Program is
designed to
assist low income persons age 55 and older polish their work skills,
gain experience in a subsidized employment situation, and then move into
an unsubsidized job.
E. How Victim/Witness Programs Assist Elders Through the Criminal
Justice Process
Pamela C. Henderson, Director, Campbell County Victim Witness Program
along with staff from the Chesapeake Victim Witness Program. This
workshop will describe the work of victim/witness programs in helping
elderly victims of crime negotiate the criminal justice system.
F. Supporting Family Caregivers: The Power of Community,
Intergenerational Partnerships, and Technology
Marilyn Maxwell, Executive Director, Mountain Empire Older Citizens,
Inc., and Ann Bruner Duesing, the University of Virginia at Wise.
This workshop will share findings from an innovative project that trains
high school students about aging and the burdens of caregiving and then
pairs them with the caregivers of frail, older persons to help the
families learn about and access services and take advantage of community
resources to improve caregiving skills and lessen the potential for
caregiver abuse.

G. The Psychological Weapons of Fraud Used Against the Elderly
Bill Kallio, State Director, AARP.
Frauds and scams are perpetrated on thousands of unsuspecting seniors
everyday - often ruining credit and sometimes wiping out a lifetime of
savings. If you've ever said "that could never happen to me" then this
is a workshop you need to attend. The session will look at the modern
psychological techniques used by legitimate advertisers to get into our
wallets everyday. Then we will examine how these same techniques, when
put into the hands of a criminal, can be turned into the psychological
weapons of fraud.
H. An Update on Mandatory APS Reporting Requirements
Gail Shea Nardi, Program Manager, Adult Services & Adult Protective
Services, Virginia Department of Social Services.
This Workshop will answer the who, what, why, when, and where questions
related to mandatory reporting for Adult Protective Services.
I. Elder Abuse Case Studies
Sgt. Barbara Walker, VCU Police Department
This workshop will share the components of both successful and
unsuccessful adult
abuse prosecutions through the use of case studies.

adult fatalities, including abuse and neglect cases.
