Key Elements of an Effective Community Response to Domestic Violence

This training is intended for professionals who are interested in learning more about domestic violence or who, through their work, offer services to victims of domestic violence. It is an excellent training for community teams collaborating to address family violence. Each session will address the five key elements for providing an effective response to domestic violence:
· identification: can you effectively define domestic violence?
· risk assessment: do you know the danger indicators?
· safety planning: can you identify options for staying safe?
· the laws: what do you know about protective orders, stalking, and other relevant laws?
resources: where can you turn for help for victims and for you?
Intended audience: staff of sexual and domestic violence programs and allied professionals
Cost: $50 for members of the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Action Alliance, $70 for nonmembers (lunch is provided) Please note: The Lesbian / Gay / Bisexual / Transgender / Questioning (LGBTQ) Task Force of the Action Alliance has made money available for training scholarships to individuals identifying as members of the LGBTQ community. Trainers
Lisa Furr is the Community Educator and Volunteer Coordinator at Safe Harbor, a domestic violence program serving the city of Richmond and Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico Counties. Lisa has over 15 years experience in group dynamics, training, diversity, and human resource management. At Safe Harbor she has managed all physical needs of the shelter, supervised relief staff and volunteers, and provided outreach and training to members of the professional community.
Barbara Shine is a semi-retired medical writer and memoirist who been a victim advocate since 1990. As a volunteer with The Haven Shelter & Services in Warsaw, Barbara has provided sexual assault victim outreach, volunteer recruitment and training, and public relations in the form of newspaper articles, radio and TV interviews, and speeches to community organizations. She is also a co-facilitator for support groups of Haven clients. Barbara is writing a memoir of her own experience with sexual trauma and recovery.
