Working with Victims with Mental Health or Cognitive Disabilities: Providing Services, Staying Safe, and Being ADA-Compliant
March 29, 10 am-4 pm, Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley, Radford VA
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a complex law that supports people with disabilities having equal access to services. Many advocates are not familiar with the ADA, and specifically how it relates to mental health and cognitive disabilities. Beyond the ADA, we often struggle with how to provide accessible, appropriate and safe services to persons with mental health and cognitive disabilities.
This one-day training will provide participants information on:
· Mental health and cognitive disabilities – characteristics, resources, and tips for communication.
· ADA requirements for working with or employing persons with mental health or cognitive disabilities.
· Best practices for serving persons with mental health or cognitive disabilities.
· How to appropriately screen for mental health and cognitive disabilities.
· What to do if you are not in compliance with the ADA or if your program is sued.
· How to talk to other clients/residents about mental health and cognitive disabilities.
Cost: $50 for VSDVAA members; $70 for nonmembers
