Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance (VSDVAA)
Trainings
Broadening Our Scope: Domestic Violence Services for Survivors with
Mental Health Disabilities
and
Widening the Lens: Sexual Violence Services for Survivors with Mental
Health Disabilities.
A short description of the "Broadening Our Scope" training is:
Mental health service providers and domestic violence advocates have
identified a number of cross-training needs, such as basic
information on domestic violence and mental health disabilities,
understanding our own attitudes and perceptions that may hinder
service provision and effectively challenging barriers, safety
planning and client stabilization, and community resources and
collaboration. This training will provide strategies for respectful
and effective interventions to enhance our responses to women and
children with mental health disabilities who have experienced
domestic violence.
A short description of the "Widening The Lens" training is:
Sometimes people with mental health disabilities (such as depression,
bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, phobias, or dissociative identity
disorder) are also survivors of sexual violence. This training will
offer an opportunity to explore mental health issues from a trauma
context, as well as the impact of sexual violence on mental
disabilities. We will also examine various societal perceptions
regarding both issues. The session will conclude with practical
strategies for effective intervention.
**Reduced fees are available (on both trainings) for advocates and
mental health service providers from communities who register and
attend together as teams. Contact Kathy Pierce (434.979.9002) for
more details and special promo codes for teams.
We are offering the "Broadening Our Scope" training on March 23rd in
Fredericksburg, on April 18th in Charlottesville and on May 24th in
Hampton.
We are offering the "Widening The Lens" training on June 27th in
Lynchburg.

On-line registration for trainings listed in the Training
Institute Calendar is now possible! Please keep in mind that you do
not need to be a member of our organization in order to register on-
line, however, we do have reduced rates for those of you who are
members. If you are interested in becoming a member, you may
also join our organization on-line at www.vsdvalliance.org.
Now - how do you register? Here are the steps:
a.. first go to our website at www.vsdvalliance.org;
b.. go to the links on the left of that page and click on "register
for
trainings on-line";
c.. click on the training for which you want to register;
d.. at the bottom of the next page click on "register yourself";
e.. fill in all the information including the name of your
organization (most of you will not need to use a promotional code but
for those of you who do, please call us first to obtain the correct
promotional code - more on promotional codes later);
f.. follow remaining steps as instructed.
g.. if you are registering other people from the same organization
at which you work, please do not register them as your guests - for
other program staff, you'll need to do the above process again, but
if they are your guest then you can follow the steps to register a
guest; Promotional codes are used by VSDVAA staff, people working the
trainings as staff support but are not staff of VSDVAA and trainers
and/or presenters. Staff, staff support (non-VSDVAA staff) and
trainers/presenters will be given in advance special codes to enter
when registering. There will also be trainings that encourage people
to come as "teams" (for example) and those trainings will also have
special promo codes. There will be other, but few, trainings that
have additional promo codes.
Prior to each training, you will receive information about an upcoming
training and if there are special promotional codes (in addition to
the ones we will use for every training for those people listed
above).
We understand that this can be very confusing and we ask that you
please contact the Charlottesville Office (434.979.9002) if you at
any time experience problems with registering or if you have any
questions concerning any part of the training and registration
process.
Thank you,
