The Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance is sponsoring a
training retreat on June 22-24 at Sweet Briar College. Our theme this year,
head, shoulders, knees and toes: THE BODY OF OUR WORK, brings together all
of the work we do: plan, prepare, prevent (head); provide nurturance (that's
the shoulders to lean on); develop supportive infrastructures (knees); and
spring into action when, where, and as needed (toes!). A variety of
workshops will address these elements of our work, including a specific
track focused on prevention.
Anthony Porter will start off the Retreat with his keynote address A Call to
Men: Becoming Part of the Solution to Ending Violence Against Women. Anthony
Porter will also offer a four-hour workshop designed specifically for men
entitled Men's Role in the Movement to End Violence Against Women.
This year we are also including a special all day workshop entitled
Achieving Financial Freedom for Survivors of Domestic Violence. Brought to
us by Brooke Ely from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, this
intensive workshop will focus on how economic abuse can present a
significant barrier to achieving safety for survivors of domestic violence,
and strategies for responding to it.
The three-day registration fee is $180 (fee includes lodging and food).
People may also register for one day for $70 (lunch included). The deadline
to register is June 15. (There is also a limited number of scholarships
available; applications are due by June 1.) To receive a registration
packet, contact Kathy Pierce at 434/979-9002 or kpierce@....
